chickendave Posted August 2, 2007 Share Posted August 2, 2007 hi everyone been lurking for a couple of weeks now and thought about time i said hello were very new to chickens and have got alot of very usefull info of the site.we have had our hens for 2 weeks now and we love them to bits,we have 6 girls 2 pied sussex,2 white sussex and 2 fenny cucoows,only 1 is laying at the moment,1 off the pied sussex and thats only every other day,but today we had our 1st shock the laying hen was coughing abit she sounded rough eyes closed and looking very sorry for herself,we took her to the vet and he said it could be microplasma i think that what its called.and gave her a couple of jabs of antibiotics and some more for the other hens,they look alright now as there free ranging all over the garden with our 2 border collies guarding them. can anyone shed some light on how they may have got this illness...regards dave Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mycoplasma is a resiratory infection that can easily be picked up, and unless the infected bird is isolated, it will spread. The Dogmother Posted August 3, 2007 Share Posted August 3, 2007 Dave, most vets will advise (I'm surprised that yours didn't mention it) that eggs should not be eaten (egg withdrawal) for a week from the end of the treatment when they are on anti-biotics.
