chickens and dogs

Recommended Posts

Another moving house related question.

The house I intend to buy has a fat little pooch who has left loads of messages around the garden.

Apart from picking up the messages is there anything more I can do to prevent nasties being passed on to my chickens when they play on the area?

What nasties can pooch poo pass on my chickens or am I worrying unnecessarily?

I can only think of worms MrsB. The thought of chickens paddling around in dog poo and spreading the stinky stuff all over the place is rather awful in itself. The dog may get same from chickens of course. We have a dog here that wanders around eating chicken poo, then he wants to lick you and have a fuss!

My dogs too love a little scooby snack of chicken poo. Dog poo can contain all sorts of nasties, but only if they're not vaccinated and wormed properly. Even if they're not it doesn't mean they'll defiantly be carrying anything. I would just give it a thorough clean up. Leave the girls in for a bit, and cut the grass before they go out. Good luck in your new home :D

Thanks Peeps, not having a dog myself I didn't have a clue what could be passed from one species to the other.

I shall do a good poo pick then sprinkle biodri on the patches as an extra bit of protection. Then I will send hubby out to mow the lawns the next day.

Sounds like a good plan. You wouldn't want that dog poop to attract a lot of flies either. I had a real problem last summer as my next door neighbour (who moved away this Xmas thankfully) never, ever picked up their dog poop and though I did my best to keep my chickens clean we had so many flies, it was horrible :vom:
