hopingforchickens
I have been treating Cornflake for sour crop since Thursday. She is showing some signs of feeling a little better, but she is still isolated as she still spends time huddled etc. How long should it normally take to recover from this and I can think of disintegrating her? Beantree
If she is on a water only diet it is a maximum of 48 hours. That's the longest we've treated them for and it is usually just 24 hours. However we have had a few cases where we have used Epsom Salts because the water only didn't work for long and they developed it again. Mix Epsom Salts as the label states for human consumption, which if I remember correctly is a teaspoon in a 250mL glass of water. From that solution take just 5mL into a syringe and well down the throat. Water only diet for 24 hours with frequent crop massaging. Then back to regular food. Problem with this method is that it destroys the gut flora as well, so 48 hours after treatment she will need probiotic yoghurt or even better Beryl's Tonic. The Dogmother
As Beantree has said, recovery shouldn't be long, but frequent bouts of sour crop can be an indication of something more seriously wrong with the hen.

hopingforchickens
Have you checked here throat for fungal cankers (cream lumps) Hopingforchickens? How do I do that? I have been massaging her crop regularly and can't feel anything. She will have periods where she seems fine but is still quite lethargic. Beantree
You have to look down her throat. Pry her beak open with your hand around her head using your finger and thumb. Try not to strain the lower (hinged) beak. Hold the top beak firmly, which is a fixed part of her head. Look for cream coloured growths in the mouth and upper neck. If she has them there they will also be in her crop. The treatment for fungal cankers is very different and requires Flagyl from the vet, which in my experience works well. As she hasn't recovered quickly that would be my next approach, but I would advise a vet sees her to explain fully.
hopingforchickens
Have a friend coming round later so will try and have a look! She seems OK at the minute, maybe I'm over thinking things...?
The Dogmother
If sour crop is persistent, I have had success with emptying the crop and syringing in 3ml of neat ACV twice a day for a couple of days.

Thanks DM, I have been trawling through past posts and saw your advice on that on about page 5! I may give that a go tomorrow, had a check and no sign of cancers so go gets crossed its just a slow recovery. I have been massaging her crop and it feels empty pretty much all the time so I am going to make sure she is drinking enough at least for now as well.
