I've used elephant grass (miscanthus)for a couple or so years now.

I like it because it's fairly cheap, a little goes a long, long way, it has a nice fresh smell and doesn't rot.

In the winter the run was flooded and I was worried about the chickens getting cold, wet feet so we tipped an entire bale out on the water. It worked, the chickens had a dry if slightly bouncy floor and when it started to get a bit pongy in March it scooped out easily.

I use aubiose or similar, but I have a slabbed, covered run. I use shredded paper or soft hay in the nesting box. My exbats don't like paper. They make a proper pretty nest when they have hay :D Easi chick is good in the covered run too. It comes in handy sized packs of 10kg, bit easier to handle than the big 20kg bags :)
