Another quandry

Recommended Posts

I've got my 2 legbar growers and their mum in a run within my WIR. They are growing so fast that they will soon have to be let out into the big run. I'm not worried about the growers as I haven't clipped their wings and they will be able to get away from any unwanted attention. It's their mum I'm worried about. She's a pekin frizzle, before I put her on the eggs she was bald on her head and her feathers were in a right state. She looks wonderful now. What to do? Should I,

A. Just let her out and see how it goes

B. put her in with my 2 young bantams and pekin

C. Keep her in my spare rabbit hutch and just let her free range all day, this means she'll be on her own at night and until I let her out in the morning

D. Buy another frizzle or young bantam to be her companion, they can either sleep in the rabbit hutch or in my shed.

This wouldn't have been a problem if her best friend hadn't died in the summer :(

Look forward to your replies :)

Hi I would let them out and just see how it goes they need to have plenty of room to get away then go from there really. If you put her in with your young ones shes gonna bully them I have all different ages together from 6 weeks -2 years the older ones are all moulting at the mo so they just all eat growers you get a bit of chasing around for a few days then settles down I never really have any nasty girls if I do I send one of the boys in to sort it out and get control  leanne :)

if she's been broody she'll start to moult soon if she's not all ready your youngsters will need to be on growers ration until they are at least 18 weeks old or laying so if your putting them in with older girls they'll all need to be on growers any way as it wont do the layers any harm but layers ration isn't good for growers but if you'll need to put a pot of mixed grit out for the layers as growers ration doesn't have a high enough calcium content

Thanks SJP, that's exactly what I've done. Although the little pekin frizzle did not have a good day. I've put her in with my young bantams and pekin. She will probably adopt them they free range morning til night. The growers are doing fine I've got 3 seperate feed stations and water supplies. No layers pellets. Grit is available. I also sprinkled some on the floor where they scratch
