Success and casualty

There have been some positives and less happy outcomes this weekend.

Someone took a lame hen To a friend at the end of last week; they rang me up, and as I was passing on Sunday, I looked in on it. The poor wee thing had a broken hock; a slight breaking in the skin makes me think that it had caught its leg in something with a hard edge and just snapped it, the fracture was clean and didn't feel displaced :( The owner didn't want it back.

Wendy held her while I splinted it with lots of cotton wool for packing, and vet wrap to hold it all together. She had a teeny bit of Metacam to help with the pain and is confined in a small crate. They'll check on her daily to make sure the splint is still firm and there aren't any pressure sores. From experience, she should be weight bearing in a few days, and out of the crate in 2 weeks.

Not such happy news was the wee hedgehog in my garden... it has been happily bimbling around for the last few nights, but this morning it was out in the flower beds when it should have been asleep in its den. I couldn't see any obvious signs of injury, but left some water and raw dog mince by it and left it for a while in case it just needed to warm up a bit. I PMed Egluntyne, who is the Hedgepig guru, and she advised that a piggie out in the daytime isn't right, so I rang a local rescue for advice. On their suggestion, I picked it up, and popped it in a box with towels, a Snugglesafe, and some water. The woman came to take it to the vet, but texted later to say that it was very poorly with Lungworm, and had to be euthanased :(
