I had assumed that buying Scottish wild salmon was 'OK' but I have recently seen some stuff about the companies killing seals (which is legal, I believe).

I understood that the 'farmers' (not the right word but can't think what is....fishermen?) could kill seals if they posed a direct threat to the salmon stocks in a specific area.

 

Sadly nothing is what it seems these days and even labels can be misleading!

'Farmer' is the right word - my brother was a fish farmer then manager with Marine Harvest some years ago. I think he got that job because he is as cold and dead-eyed as a fish (sorry, fish!).

Mmm Scottish Wild Salmon Co seem to have a bit of a reputation. It is reported that in addition to shooting seals (when they say they only use acoustic deterrants) but it is also alleged that they net large areas of river estuaries thereby preventing salmon being caught by rod and reel. Difficult to know what to buy. Is any seafood company "clean"?
