Phantom Pregnancy - all the signs seem to be there.

Recommended Posts

Our two rabbits (both girls) are about 4 months old.

Recently Bambi has started being a bit grumpy, yesterday she picked up her food bowl and threw it down the run. The other one has been runnning around with mouthfuls of hays.

Today Bambi was sat on a pile of hay and her own fur - and did some murmuring when picked up.

So seems to look like phantom pregnancy - but do we just let it pass or should we be doing something else?

oh and lots of digging holes and trenches

Sounds like phantom pregnancy to me! Pulling out their fur to make a nest is a classic sign.

You need to get them both spayed. This will stop the phantom pregnancies and also the stroppiness female bunnies can exhibit (bunny PMT, if you like!). More importantly however, it eliminates the risk of uterine cancer - unspayed bunnies have a staggering 80% likelihood of getting this as they grow older.

Four months is a little young to be spayed, but it depends on the size of your bunnies - a medium to large rabbit might be ready. With smaller buns, six months is the recommended age. As yours are a pair, it would make sense to get them booked in on the same day then they can be reunited that evening and their bond won't be broken. I'd book a visit to the vet to see if he/she thinks they're old enough to be done.
