Luvachicken
Ok, I admit to being a bit naughty and chucking the spikey sweet chestnut cases back over the fence, but then we did offer to cut/trim the tree overhanging our garden, anyway, today, I found that the chickens had been chomping on a big, fat chestnut that had got in their run. Yesterday I was very puzzled as to how one of the shells even got in their run. Today I got the answer, the cheeky chickens pulled it in from the inside. They seemed to enjoy the chestnut they had found but I really don't know if they should be eating them raw. Does anyone know the answer ? Beantree
Chickens usually know what's safe to eat Luvachicken and as they are OK for human consumption I would expect in moderation they will be fine. The test will be their poos in the morning to see if it has had a bad digestive reaction.
Luvachicken
Have checked their poops yesterday and today Beantree and every thing seems normal, so that's good. But I have decided not to let them eat them. Such nasty prickly cases and they really hurt even through gardening gloves, so I dread to think what they could do to the chickens feet. Shame there aren't laws for massive trees in little gardens
redsunset
I have no idea re the sweet chestnuts but I do get your reasoning behind the nut casings due to feet. If I rem right you have fluffy footed chickens in part and it's hard to see if anything bothering them until limping. As I have a hundred year old house I was used to finding bits of old crockery in the earth and some glass which I picked up immediately for that very reason. Been chucking some v small apples fallen of the trees in my bit of garden over to theirs, they are not fussed but after a week they will be gone. Chooks have an uncanny knack of knowing what is ok to eat as I've had most poisonous plants at some time, or those they don't like and they won't touch them. Some shrubs thrive in chook bits.........a learning curve for me anyway as in what to plant in future plus provides shelter
Eggshell
Which shrubs do you find thrive among the chickens, Redsunset?
Luvachicken
Yes redsunset, I do have fluffy footers so I have been making sure the prickly blighters aren't in the run, at least there not many chestnuts left to come down now. I'm hoping the guy over the back might think he has rather a lot and trim the tree but I doubt it. I think pottery and glass pops up in all gardens. I found a lovely blue bit of pottery the other day and numerous bits of glass. I am just waiting for some real treasure to pop up. Which shrubs do you find thrive among the chickens, Redsunset? Plastic ones ?
