Food Waste programme

Recommended Posts

Did anyone watch Huw Fearnley- Whittingstall's programme the other evening? I would've been pleased to have grown parsnips as 'ugly' as the ones rejected by Morrisons!

Hopefully this will prompt supermarkets to change policy. I often buy reduced items and save a bundle. What does everyone else do?

One Dutch supermarket, Jumbo, has a rule that products on their sell by date are free. That saves me loads and prevents the supermarket from chucking everything. Although the personnel isn't always very happy to give me loads of free stuff.

For things that are past sell by date, I get a free product. I mostly scout the meat department and ready made meals.

In the UK supermarkets are not allowed to sell or even give away foor past its sell by date. I used to get lots of cheese one or two days over vastly reduced from the counter in local Tesco but then they said that they were not even allowed to give it away (not even to their own staff) and it all had to be binned. Some of the soft cheeses were only just ripening and they were chucked
