spott
I seem to have a hen of very little brain: buffy While she is pecking at the grub her feet are scratching the ground She drops her eggs wherever she happens to be, in the run, in the garden, in the eglu... When she does happen to lay her egg in the nesting box she meticulously empties out all the straw and lays her egg in the plastic nest box Is there anything i can put in the bottom of the nest box to cushion it? She pulls out newspaper. Shes a very skittish, shy hen... But soooooo pretty!
Beantree
Lots of ours scratch the ground when they eat from the feeders Spott, but very few dig out the nest boxes since we lined them with feedbag paper (which is heavy stuff) and used wood shavings. Straw is not good for nest boxes on account of it harbouring red mite. We did use hay originally but some dug it out to get to seeds and bugs. We have a few who drop their eggs in the runs, so that's not unusual really.
mullethunter
I've got one who always kicks all the easichick out of the nest box - even if she isn't laying an egg! I'm sure she thinks I hide tasty stuff under it!
