Converting Eglu from Guineas to bantams

Recommended Posts

Hi all, we have a 5 year-old Eglu Classic with run which until recently housed our Guinea pigs. Sadly these are no more and we will be getting three bantams in the new year. How easy is it to convert the Guinea house? What's the difference inside? Is it possible to just buy a new inner bit?

Any more general advice you can offer about what Omlet-branded stuff is useful for chickens in an Eglu and what I should just buy from my local country store?

Thank you for any help!

Hi you can get a converter kit from Omlet.

They are £71.00. I think they are hard to find second hand. Some people I have heard use them as they are and don't worry about converting them but I did convert mine.

Dont spend the money on the kit. I would say not necessary. Someone on here recently had photos of a VERY SIMPLE perch they made for her three bantams inside the Eglu. They use that and not the roosting bars. Maybe a nice show box in the corner for nesting.

Maybe £10 for wood and find an old shoe box.

This is the thread which shows photos of the wooden perch idea. http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=100633&p=1328399&hilit=perch+wooden#p1328399

Hope that helps you save a bit of money.

What you need to do for bantams will depend on the breed as well Pinktoothbrush. We've just purpose built a coop for a Leghorn Bantam breeding quartet. They are very flighty and want a high perch and room to manoeuvre their large tails, although they only need 15cm of perch each. We have two perches because they will change position to suit the wind direction. Each is 5cm wide with well rounded corners; top for them to grip and bottom to prevent injury if they bang their combs. Important that a wooden perch can be lifted out easily because it needs to be checked daily for red mite at the ends, although it must also be secure so it doesn't move while they are roosting and moving about on it.
