Poorly hen

Recommended Posts

Good Morning everyone

I am sure this has been dealt with before but I cannot find it.

My oldest hens Martha is not well - though to look at her she seems fine except she has dirty knickers which is not like her.

She is not hunched over in a corner looking depressed but she doesn't seem to be eating much at all. She is constantly drinking water and I am sure it is her poo that is very runny. It looks like milk with the odd green bit in where she has eaten some spinach or cabbage as she free ranges with the other girls. It has been going on the three days today being the fourth. She will eat the odd bit of mixed corn and sunflower seeds and the 'odd' dried mealy worm.

What should I do?

Please help I would appreciate any advice

Thank you

Hmm, could be anything from the description;

When did you last worm her, and what with? If she hasn't been wormed recently, then I would do it, with Flubenvet.

Look at her diet... exclude greenstuff and anything apart from pellets at this stage. Add some Orego-Stim to their water, which will help with digestive issues.

If the problem persists after you've done this, then take her and a faecal sample to the vet. They will probably ask you to do what I have above, so you will be one step ahead

Thank you Dogmother

I have been watching her but been so busy haven't had enough time to do anything. She has seemed ok not depressed looking and free ranging with the other girls and drinking water as well as pecking a little. I saw her eat a slug that she fund so she is still eating a little. She certainly hasn't separated herself from the rest.

This morning I felt her crop and it feels lumpy so I massaged it for a while which she seemed to like. I wonder if she has 'sour crop'. I didn't smell her breath so i don't now if that means anything.

I wondered if I should get her some maggots? I think I read it somewhere that it might be helpful?

Can you advise me?

Hi

Just to let you know I had Martha PTS.

She started excluding herself from the cube at night so I took her inside to protect her and keep her warm. The first night she slept soundly - I kept my eye on her through the night.

The second night she excluded herself outside the WIR so I took her in again and she didn't sleep well - in my view - so I took her to the vet the next morning and we agreed that it would be the kindest thing to do - bless her!

Thanks for all the help. I am so sorry that Martha didn't get to see the new place we are moving to - it is a lovely hen spot with lots of fresh grass and apple trees. Heyho!
