Grandmashazzie
Is anyone a fan of electric steamers? I generally use an inset to pots and steam veggies but have not used them for fish or meat. I think they would be too small? Have looked online and as usual there is a wide choice and a variety of prices. I have a touring caravan and am heading away at Easter brrrr and thought one might be handy as I don't think we will be using the barbeque. Any recommendations greatly appreciated. Sil-El
I used to have a Tefal one a few years ago and loved it. It was 3 tier and I used it to death to be honest Really handy for veg although I did also cook the odd Haggis in it and also salmon pieces and I also steamed chicken breasts in it but they tended to be overdone at the edges and not cooked in the middle. I only stopped using it when the baskets pretty much fell apart and then I got a stainless steel one I use on the hob and it's been going strong for years now and so I can't justify spending more money or taking up more space on the work surface by getting a new electric one The only thing you have to be careful of is that it doesn't run out of water or it will switch itself off and then you go back and find everything half cooked! I think if you want to use it in a caravan it would probably be a good idea, I guess if you want to cook fish or meat portions you could experiment wrapping them in foil first so they don't go dry at the edges. CatieB
Sorry I can't help much with the steamer - I have one but never use it. I used to use it when I was weaning my son but not since. I found it too much of a faff and so much to wash up for what I got out of it if that makes sense. Certainly couldn't be bothered washing one up in my caravan. In contrast I do use my slow cooker all the time in my caravan and adapt recipes to use it- my rationale being I am using their electricity. We do use our BBQ all year at the caravan but we have a CADAC which was the best buy ever. We don't just use it for BBQ food but roasts and paella too. Cant recommend it enough. Grandmashazzie
Hi Catie b we have a cadac but are not as adventurous as you. Doing mainly sausages and burgers etc. I may just take my slow cooker. I have got Ella's vegan cookbook and am loving all her butternut squash and chickpea recipes. Am thinking my second sentence is at odds with the first .We ave two new foster children who are morbidly obese and finding the vegan recipes good for filling them while aiding weight loss. Both have lost a stone in 6 weeks.
CatieB
Wow that's some going, well done to them. Hope it continues The paella cadac top can be used for all sorts. Curries etc. I use the normal top to cook salmon beautifully with a crisp skin. Yum yum yummy. Spatchcock chicken is also very successful. Obviously neither are relevant if you are vegan. My friend does jacket potatoes in her slow cooker. She says it's very easy although I've never tried.
