soapdragon
Around 8.10am last Tuesday morning OH answered the 'phone to a person claiming to be from TalkTalk (who provide our internet.) To cut a long story short my usually sensible and savvy OH ended up giving control of the computer to this person (even though I was standing next to him telling him not too!!) before realising that this probably was a scam after all and ending the call when they asked for bank account details so that they could credit us with £50.00 (although he didn't, at that point, turn off the computer.) I was very suspicious and called TalkTalk and they confirmed that it wasn't them that had called and said that they would investigate from their end. They told me to turn off the computer and get it to a technician to be checked. By this time OH had gone to work so my next call was to First Direct as I was worried about our accounts. I spoke to an amazingly helpful man in their fraud dept who took me through running a full McAfee scan (which took over 4 hours and came up with nothing, thank goodness!) and reassured me that, once the computer had been turned off, this disabled the scammers access and so terminated their ability to either raid our accounts or do anything nasty. My worry was that the computer had been left on for about two hours after OH ended the call - he was still on the 'phone with the scammers as I had to go on the school run but the First Direct man didn't think that this would have caused problems. We have now changed various passwords and OH has learned a very valuable lesson (not least to LISTEN TO ME!!) However, I still keep checking my bank account !!! Olly
Crikey - I've heard about this one on the radio recently. It seems they are targeting people who are actually customers of TalkTalk, which suggests they've got access to some of their customer information. Sounds as if you had a lucky escape. sjp
your bank accounts should be safe if nothing gone out or been requested to go out after 24 - 48 hrs. then the window of opportunity is lost as by then you should have changed http://[bALL[/b]of your pass words and informed your bank which can put a flag on your accounts for any unusual transactions I'd be inclined to get the computer check out to a tech geek through as not all spy ware and Trojans can be found by 'off the self ' anti virus software plus the remote access permission might still be on the system
