Air conditioning planning requirements?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had air con fitted at home and had any planning issues? We are looking at having a single unit installed in our bedroom which gets the evening sun and gets very hot, we are both struggling to sleep at the moment and like a cool room, we rarely have the radiator on in there in the winter.

We will have to install the outside unit above head height because we have a narrow passage way down the side of our house. We have no neighbour's on that side of the house but the unit could well be visible to any eagle eyed planners passing by. I am wondering if this could be a problem.

I intend to ring the council and make a general enquiry too. Don't want to spend the money and then find that we have to remove it.

No first hand knowledge but a quick google brought up a page from Camden council who require a planning application for any plant, ventilation, air con or extraction equipment where part of it is fitted to the outside of a property. I imagine most scenarios are commercial but the same rules may apply to residential too.

Although this may apply to you;

Very small external equipment (for example, a small extractor fan that is not visible from the surrounding streets) may not require planning permission if it does not materially change the external appearance of the property.

I think you are right to check with your council first on this one (pre-planning advice).

Having looked into this further, since 2011 it has been part of permitted development rights. Only need planning on listed property or if less than 1m away from neighbouring property. We are having a single unit fitted in our bedroom.

I really must apologise, because ever since we started this process the weather has been pants, and we think it may be our fault :roll:
