Egg during moult - cause for concern?

Recommended Posts

One of my pekins Bernadette - as some of you will know - struggles with eggs. When in lay she mostly lays good eggs, but occasionally has a day when she appears to be in so much pain she stumbles around struggling to walk looking generally poorly, and generally after this she'll lay a thin shelled egg through the roosting bars early next morning and is then fine again.

At the moment she's moulting (along with the others). She's just about finished losing feathers now but has plenty that aren't grown yet. Because I have two new POL araucana bantams and all my existing girls are moulting, they're all eating growers pellets at the moment.

Yesterday afternoon Bernie was having a poorly afternoon which I thought was odd as she's moulting and hasn't paid for over a month, but then this morning, sure enough, thin shelled egg. Very strange - should I be worried?

Poor Bernadette :(

I'm afraid I don't know if you should be worried or not, but I think she wouldn't lay if it was harming her, or she will stop very soon because of the moulting.

Do you have some poultry tonic you could give them ? That might help to give her a boost whilst making all those new feathers.

I do some have avipro avian left. I put some in their water when the new girls arrived but I could give them some again. I also have some nutri drops but don't think she needs those.

Most of the time she seems totally fine, this egg was just completely out of the blue. Poor Bern.

Thanks for the reply Luvachicken.
