chocchick
Did anyone see the programme on Friday night on cut flowers? Apparently most cut flowers are imported from abroad, and British growers are struggling. http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/tv_and_radio/factsheets/pages/84.shtml British flowers are fresher as can be transported in 24 hours, whereas some flowers are weeks old and will go off quicker. Lesley
I didn't see it, but it was something I was aware of. Stratford Farmers' Market has a stall where they sell cut flowers - in their proper season as well. I was chatting to the stallholder and they do struggle. craftyhunnypie
I don't think we grow enough flowers in our home gardens in this country. In Austria & Germany - more or less same climate as us - they have gardens of smallish sunflowers, cascading million bells flowers from their window boxes. Every season brings new flowers, colours & decorations. They have lovely arrangements near their doors of pots with flowers in & big shiny baubles on sticks with ribbons, or round bay trees with straw hearts on. They just make an effort. There is nothing nicer than lovely flowers in the garden all year round. I do so hate winter when we have no flowers in our garden. I normally plant ornamental cabbages for those gloomy months.
