Advice for my friend's persistent broody please.

Recommended Posts

My friend has a very persistent broody.

The 3 days and 3 nights are just not working.

Her hen has been in the broody cage for over a week and as soon as she is set free she heads back to the egg port.

I suggested leaving her for longer still but my friend really wants to give her a dunking in the cold water.

The only thing I can think of is using freezer blocks wrapped in a towel so she has no choice but to sit on them.

Does anyone else have any ideas for my friend ?

The shock of the dunking can kill them so I'd never recommend that - I have done it myself before I knew better as 'experienced' people were advising me that way and I can honestly say it didn't make any difference whatsoever other than having a very wet chicken.

My broody chicken (she's in the sin bin as of this evening!) usually takes 3 days to break now but when I first started using the cage she did have a couple of 8 - 10 day spells in there. But she's broody every 3 weeks or so!

I haven't any real advice to help other than I really wouldn't dunk after reading of other people's experiences and loss.

Thank you both for replying.

I had read about the dunking method before so I am glad that you agree with me Hippie Chick in that it can harm them.

The trouble with the frozen blocks are that they don't stay frozen for long enough.

I've discovered some cooling dog mats which could help but they were quite expensive.

Do you think a fan in the broody cage would work ?
