Please help! New chickens and need help! New member in need!

Recommended Posts

Hi my names James I have chickens named (in pecking order) Blinky, Gertrude and Nell and was wondering if there is a way of telling which chicken layed which egg (when they do finally lay them) Everyone on their signatures seems to know whoch chicken layed which egg, separating them is not an option though

thanks for your help

James

By the way they are due to lay eggs in January at the earliest.

Hi James and welcome. to the Forum

The only way you can tell is by spying on them!! I usually disguise myself as a bit of the hedge otherwise they come running back down the ladder thinking that I have treats for them and I'm worried that they'll drop an egg on the way down!!

I have two Miss Pepperpots and two Gingernuts and each pair lay the same colour eggs, so I have to be quick to catch which one has just come out of the nesting box.

I thought I wouldn't know either but I found it was quite easy. As mentioned, spy on them to begin with. With mine, Henrietta lays pale long thin eggs, Scarlett lays larger dark brown ones, and Sandie lays mid brown ones with speckles. So I can work it out easily! Good luck..

Hello James & welcome to you!

I joined the forum a few weeks back whilst I was waiting for my eglu and chickens to arrive. They came on Thursday but I too wondered how I would tell who was laying what... Everyone does seem very friendly here - and it would seem that the only stupid question is the one we don't ask!

Hi James. I wasn't sure at first who had laid the first egg. I had 4 arrived on the same day and I guessed it was probably one of the 2 fatest girls who both had redish combs. So I put 1st egg by Henny on my signature.

I didn't actually see her lay an egg for weeks and in the end I had guessed right. When the second one started laying the egg looked similar and it was the 2nd gingernut. When the 3rd egg arrived it was a completely different colour and by process of ilimination it was the Miss Pepperpot.

You might not know who laid at first but they might give tell-tale signs. Crouching a few weeks before the event, and then sometimes proudly making a "bawking" noise after.....

Hi James

I'm a spy too I'm afraid - only I use binoculars whilst I'm sitting at breakfast and doing my OU work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The three that have started laying definitly lay different shades of egg - one is pure white, one is creamy coloured and the other is brown (the !egg! not the hens  . Don't know what shades the other three will come up with
