themoomin
Hello! Can anyone give me some advice on HOW to dunk my broody hen, Chicken Kiev? She's been brooding for a week now and I was going to just leave her, but today I found that poor Chicken Korma has not been allowed to lay her egg in the nest so she laid it on the slats, whereupon it broke and fell into the dropping tray. I have been locking them both out of the Eglu so Kiev can't sit, but the minute I open it again she rushes back in, very cross. So, dunking is the next plan. Do I just dip her in, or submerge her , or just her feet, should the water be really cold or a bit warm, do I dry her afterwards, how many times?? Help! I am a bit worried about doing this!!! feemcg
Before you resort to dunking, have you tried putting a bag of ice or ice-pack under her?
themoomin
Before you resort to dunking, have you tried putting a bag of ice or ice-pack under her? No Fee - do you think I should? Would I put it under her when she rushes in there at night - I've got them locked out of the Eglu just now while I'm at work and they are freeranging, so she's probably just sitting all puffed up under the tree ... Won't her poor girlie bits freeze if she sits on an ice block??!
lisa33
I have the same problem with my Bobbi. I put an ice block under her yesterday, then took it away as I was worried she would get frost bite on her feet. I don't know how to dunk her but I'm going to give it a go tonight. I will keep an eye on this thread for any further informaiton.
Laura & CTB
If you wrap an ice block with a towel it should be cold enough to do the job but not cold enough to hurt! I tried it but Gucci kept kicking it out of the nest box anyway so I have done the "dunk" which seemed to work. Get a bowl of tap cold water and hold hen in it so that her underside gets wet. Hold for a couple of minutes ( or as long as she lets you ). I only had to do this twice and Gucci stopped being broody. Hope it helps
Egluntyne
I put an ice pack in the nesting box and cover it with a layer of Aubiose. It did the trick for my hen.

themoomin
Just to let you know that the ice-block worked, after a night and most of a day sitting on a freezer pack wrapped in a towel, Chicken Kiev got the message and is now back to her normal mad self. She is laying again, small eggs to start with but they are getting bigger. So, no need for the dreaded dunking. Hurrah!
