sparkleeeeee
sorry for being really dim and you will probably think its obvious but i am not good at sexing chickens and i have been waiting to see if any of them do a cock -a-doodle-do before knowing for sure. i am now convinced that i have possibly two silkie cockerels and one hen. or three cockerels i have looked at photos on the internet and silkie cockerels seem to have a bulb comb (which two possibly three of mine have). what do you think? one has a big bulb, one slightly smaller and i am not sure about the third as looking at it its a bulb as well i have added some photos to my album i am going to have to rehome them as we have a snotty neighbour, does anybody want them? its a shame as they are really tame and are soooo lovely. i ill put an add in the free section. Snowy
Oh dear Sparkleee, that first picture definitely looks like a cockerel Lovely chap though. Maybe he won't be a loud crower if he's on his own? Can't tell with the other two, if they are the same age I would have thought they would be better developed by now. I may be wrong though. sparkleeeeee
hi snowy i think the other two are slightly younger and the second one is getting bigger wattles by the day and the bulb comb is getting bigger and redder. the smaller one i was always convinced was a hen (just because she looks like a hen) but now i am not sure. the bigger ones are always sparing now and are the only ones who confront the new marans and sussex by doing a kind of karate kick at them its a shame as they are so affectionate but i took the risk when i got them as they were not sexed. do you know if the hens still have the bulb type comb? all my other breeds of hen have spiky combs
feemcg
Hi, I don't know much about Silkies but looking at your photos and checking on Feathersite, I'm afraid yours look like boys - the girls seem to have barely any comb or wattles. Snowy
I've only seen a few silkies - there was a small family of black silkies at a farm we went to recently. As Fee says, the hens have hardly any comb and wattles. Here is a picture of a hen - no wattles: http://www.1976design.com/blog/archive/2003/09/26/chickens/
Shirl
Silkie hens don't have any kind of bulb comb. The cocks also have longer fine festhers on the head whereas the hens are just rounded. I successfully sexed at pair at a local animal park the other day the OH was impressed!
chocchick
Someone like Cinnamon had a similar thread with a picture, and it was decided that he was a cockeral. Might be worth searching. They are gorgeous, I love the one with his/her face right near the camera
