The forever sneezy silkie

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have had my 3 silkies for 6 months now, they will be a year old next month. One of them arrived much smaller than the others and sneezed from the onset, in hindsight now it is clear this was something she brought with her from the breeder.

She had a course of baytril straight away which sadly did nothing. Despite this, she has continued to grow (now bigger than one of my others!) And has no other symptoms. She is happy and eats and lays well but the sneezing continues. I tried her on a course of tylan last month and again it has made no impact. I am now slightly at a loss of where to go next with this. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Many thanks,

Verity

Hi, so I also have silkies and I have never seen them sneeze, however sneezing is usually a sign of a bacterial infection, which will require a vet and most likely a course of antibiotics. If she has any other symptoms like coughing or if she it not as active as the others then that’s the best thing to do. Silkie chickens (I don’t think) have allergies and so for her to be sneezing is quite unusual. If she is all round healthy in every other department then I don’t think you have much to worry about :) good luck!!

Yes- the baytril first and then the tylan more recently when I went back to them as the baytril hadnt worked.

They have been helpful so far but I know they struggled to prescribe the tylan as they are really a small animals vet. I wondered about taking her to an exotics vet to see if they had any other options?

Do what you can, if the small vets aren’t seem to be doing much then a place that maybe specialises in chickens is a good idea. I recommend also putting a supplement that you can get pretty much at any pet store, as it restores all-round health. Make sure you use an antibacterial spray when you clean them out so that there is no dust what’s so ever, because sneezing is usually due to some sort of respiratory problem. Let us know how it goes :) The website Avian Vet online is an online consultant that you can message that can tell you a bit more as I am not an expert.
