Guest
okay, as some/most of you know, I've had the girls for almost 2 days now- I'm dying to spoil them but don't want to upset their tums. They've been fed layers mash all their little lives. What treats would you recommend and when can I start giving them? I thought maybe a bit of sweetcorn tomorrow evening- is it tinned sweetcorn I should give them or corn off the cob?
Karen & co.
They will love both , but may just look at it first, in a sort of "What do you expect me to do with that?" kind of expression I would use the tinned type in water not salt and sugar, It will be lovely watching them blossom from ex battery to garden chooks karen x
Egluntyne
I buy the cheap tinned stuff and rinse it well. They go mad for it.

arowland17
yes mine like both too, although I think they prefer corn on the cob now they know what it is, at first they looked at it and didn't quite know what to do but they've got the hang of it now and it keeps them occupied for a good while they kick it around out of excitement while eating it! superjules
I hang a corn cob in the run every other day. I screw one of those big cuphook-type-thingies (but the one with the hook joined up - sorry don't know technical term) into the handle end of the corn cob and string it up from the top of the run so that it's at pecking height. The GNR adore it and strip it bare. Hanging it up stops it getting dirty and stops it getting eaten quite so quickly. Might do the same with a cabbage or cauli today depending on what's cheap on the market.
ktdot
Do you cook it when it's on the cob or do they have it raw?
chocolatedog
We usually take a corn cob and cut it into 3 separate smaller pieces as we noticed that Ginger and Pepper kept chasing Spice away from the single larger one we put in the run. So now whichever one/s the 2 older ones are pecking at, she always gets a chance too..... And we always cook it first....... not sure if they can eat it raw or not, but we always boil it anyway.....
