nightnicon
Hi, I'm just getting started with chicken owning and decided to get a bigish house and run but only want to start off with 2 chickens however I have no idea what breed to get. I have 2 kids one 2 year old and one 2 month old so I want something that's friendly I'm also a little nervous about handling them myself as they've always kinda freaked me out lol! i'm after a good egg layer so hybrids may be a good solution but also a friendly breed that won't go broody. Theres a guy down the road from me that has some in which are, a light sussex, bluebell, maran, leghorns, amber stars, rhode stars, bovens nero (all hybreds) and Buff Orpingtons. I'm open to other breeds too just have no idea which ones would be best. Happy to mix them and will probably end up with 4 birds in a year or so. thanks
chelsea
we have a maran, she is quite a character, always busy and perky and she's laid every day since we had her! Cant comment on the broody bit yet as we havent had her that long. (august). Buff Orpingtons are lovely chickens, very big and docile and friendly (easily tamed) I dont have one but they were on my list of "must haves". Guest
Buff Orpingtons are gorgeous, but not good layers, unfortunately, so if you're after a reliable egg supply, they are not the breed to go for. I'd recommend Bluebelles - they're my favourite breed, they grow to be beautiful big buxom girls, who lay lovely mid-brown eggs, fairly reliably. My old Bluebelles used to lay (on average) 13 days out of 14. I have three children, and found the Bluebelles to be the friendliest chickens I've had - they're just lovely, lovely girls! Snowy
Good advice so far! In general hybrids give better temperament with good egg laying. My friendliest hen is one of my new girls - Roley Mo, a hybrid maran. She's not laying yet but is always round my feet and loves to be picked up for cuddles! BeckyBoo
Hi there, I'd get three (in case the unthinkable happens and one dies, that way you're not left with a lonley hen) and our friendliest is a Calder Ranger (hybrid) same as a Gingernut Ranger on here I think followed by our Black Rock, again same as the Mrs Pepperpot. They're still churning out an egg a day after our breeds have stopped. Have fun chossing! Mrs Bertie
Hen Watch
Hi, I have a hybrid Amber Star (very docile, friendly, lovely). I also have 3 hybrids from Omlet (2 Gingernuts & 1 Pepperpot) also good with the children. Not sure what their breed name is if you buy them elsewhere, but I'm sure someone on here knows. They are all very good with my children and with my 2 yr old nephew, who hated them at first, now chases them round the garden. I would just say, with children, supervise them when bending down to chickens. Mine will ocassionally mistake a mole for food and have a little peck (I'm talking on arms now ..... but for me, I thought it best to teach my nephew not to crouch down to feed the chickens at face level). Guest
My Amber Star is gorgeous. She is really friendly and actually asks to be picked up. She's gone down very well with all my children. She started laying last week at 20 weeks old. To echo Shona, my Bluebelle is the next friendliest. Of the Omlet girls, I prefer the Gingernuts, but it is my Pepperpot who will sit on DD1's lap for ages. They all lay well.
Rhapsody
I love any kind of Sussex- mine is the friendliest chook in the world and lays beautiful shiny apricot coloured eggs every day pretty much.My Bluebelles are also very tame and one of them lays massive dino-eggs, her record is 110grams!
