xsoggyx Posted October 18, 2007 Share Posted October 18, 2007 I am still leaving the door open on the eglu but feel guilty that they are too cold whilst i sit inside roasting as the wife as the thermostat beyond the surface temperature of the sun! I thought of customising a door entrace on the eglu with some sort of plastic stips like my mum had in the late 70's into the kitchen. Couperman Posted October 18, 2007 Share Posted October 18, 2007 A lot of people on here shut the Eglu door but don't lock it and then train the chooks to push it open when they want to be out. Does anyone think this is a good idea or has any other suggestions? People with wooden houses often use rubber car mats, cut into strips. You won't have to get up at all early after we change the clocks tomorrow week. You will also be safe in the knowledge that your hens are in a fox-proof bed. In winter, I like saying goodnight to my hens and letting them out in the morning: some days it's the only time that I see them. (Summer is a bit harder, as it involves getting up rather early: but those with foxes around ought to keep the Eglu door closed at night all the year round.) feemcg Posted October 19, 2007 Share Posted October 19, 2007 My 6 week old chicks push the eglu door open (since they were 4 weeks old) so they're not long in learning. I've also seen pics of traditional hen houses with strips of carpet over the door. Don't worry about them being too cold, its more the fox protection you need to worry about.
