caro
Hi We've had our girls for 2 months (Winnie - Gingernut & Flo - Bovans Nera). Winnie started to lay about 3 weeks ago, after growing a full set of wattles & comb in what seemed a like a few minutes!! Flo seems a bit younger as she isn't showing much change in size or maturity. Anyway.... today I collected Winnie's egg as usual and next to it was a lovely brown egg, but....... it was the size of a large marble! I don't want to panic, but this doesn't seem like a good thing. Can anyone help please? Paul (Caro's old man)
Egluntyne
Nothing to panic about I'm sure. Just takes a while for their egg laying apparatus to sort itself out. You'll go from one extreme to another...the next one could well be a double yolker. A long as they seem well and are eating and drinking normally, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. Welcome to the forum.
barnabydaisy
don't worry at all! our black star's first egg we were convinced had been layed by a passing pigeon! and she has laid them like that since. it doesn't help when our old girl mosca who is a gingernut lays massive ones so hers will always be smaller but still yummy!! love mim x
caro
Thanx guys. I have to say, the forum is fantastic! Although this is our first post, we regularly visit (there's a lot of very mad people out there!!). 2 hens for 2 months; we've never been so entertained! I never realised just how individual each girl would be. Winnie's gone from nervy and reserved to full on cheeky, chattery, greedy pig and Flo is clearly quite demure! Dancing Gal
We have only had our girls for 2 weeks and they have completely taken over our lives - some much of our time is just spent sitting and watching what they get up. They are sooooo entertaining and all completely different characters. Even the cats join us to watch them.
The Pearsons
Paxo once laid an egg no bigger than my little finger nail. It had yolk and white. Since then normal and big eggs from her. Helen in Hume
xScrunchee
Sounds like the egg I found in the run a little while ago. It was laid on my birthday-not very generous, would have preferred a nice double yolker
