chelsea
It depends on the breed. Some chooks start laying anything from 20 weeks old to 26 weeks old, some other breeds longer. We have large breed cochins and they take 2 years to reach full maturity! havent a clue when we will get eggs from them!!

RubyMurray
Hi there, my 2 hybrids were 19 and 20 weeks old when they laid their first eggs. The light sussex took about 6 weeks longer. I have some chicks that are 11 weeks old a the mo, 1 is a light sussex and the other 2 are hyrids so I'll see how old they are when they atart. The other light sussex is a young chap so I'm not sure how long it will take him?? ha ha! See ya,
Henhathnofury
We have a Miss Pepperpot who we were told was 19 weeks old. Six weeks later there is no sign of any eggs. She is also a feisty madam who swerves and squawks when we try to stroke her. But she will run to us to see if there is food. So, a freeloading foul-tempered (pun intended) chicken..... pgainey
My 2 Omlet GNR's were about 18 weeks old (we were told) Cash laid after 3 weeks but Tango is less developed in the face (ie comb and wattles smaller and pale) Cash has laid every day since! Just be patient.
Henhathnofury
I think that also you can look for signs. A general friendliness or at least a thaw, is a sign that the docility that accompanies laying is about to begin. The chicken may crouch or dig little dips in the garden to nest. It's daft but my Miss Pepperpot is so loathing of us all that it actually upsets me sometimes. A friend rang me one day and I was very low - but when I told her that it was because my chicken didn't like me, she put the 'phone down. Then she 'phoned again recently and I was elated: 'Helena has submitted to me!' I exclaimed and she gave a big sigh. I am truly a mad hen woman in her mind but all these little steps are significant to us hen keepers. An egg is equivalent to a kiss and a cuddle in my books - it just says something, however illogical and unbiological that may be. So yes, be patient and love them. They are so rewarding and amusing in so many ways.....
