Ex batts and red mite

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone well I picking my ex batts up on Saturday and was wondering whether you treated therm for red mite. I asked the coordinator and she said not to worry because they're innoculated to within an inch of their lives. I assume you can't innoculate for mites though :? Also on the BHWT site it says they may have mites. On that basis surely I should do it as a preventative thing? What has everyone else done?

Morning Shirl!

I am pretty certain that when AnnieP got her 6 exbatts they were covered in mites. I may be wrong but i would treat them just in case.

Barrier red mite/lice powder is good and smells yummy! :wink:

All the best with your new rescue girls and congratulations!!! :D

No idea how long it takes to work, but yes, you should dust 'against the grain' so to speak. Pay particular attention to the neck and vent area.

Diatom also works well, by drying out the little critters. Takes about 24 hours to kill them off, then needs repeating after 8 days to kill off the eggs.

Piccies please!! :wink::wink:

I've had my 6 ex batts a week today and they seem so thrilled to be scratching around the cube run (I've just ordered my second run extension for them!), their feathers are growing back already and I've had loads of eggs from them. I'm really thrilled to have them and I'm so glad I can offer them a decent home and life.
