Shirl
Hi everyone well I picking my ex batts up on Saturday and was wondering whether you treated therm for red mite. I asked the coordinator and she said not to worry because they're innoculated to within an inch of their lives. I assume you can't innoculate for mites though Also on the BHWT site it says they may have mites. On that basis surely I should do it as a preventative thing? What has everyone else done? Christian
Morning Shirl! I am pretty certain that when AnnieP got her 6 exbatts they were covered in mites. I may be wrong but i would treat them just in case. Barrier red mite/lice powder is good and smells yummy! All the best with your new rescue girls and congratulations!!! Shirl
Ok I'll do that. How long does it take for it to work? Any idea? Any do you raise the feathers and powder the base/skin like you would a dogs coat?
Christian
No idea how long it takes to work, but yes, you should dust 'against the grain' so to speak. Pay particular attention to the neck and vent area. Diatom also works well, by drying out the little critters. Takes about 24 hours to kill them off, then needs repeating after 8 days to kill off the eggs. Piccies please!!
Egluntyne
I also mix it in with the Aubiose I put in the nesting box, so that they get some on their feathers when snuggling down.
Shirl
That's a good idea. I'll give them a dusting and then put some in the nest. Thanks
xScrunchee
Also a sprinkling in their dustbath helps. That way when they have a dustbath they redmite powder themselves
Shirl
I have to confess because they've been freeranging until last week my birds havewn't had a dust bath but I guess that's something to rectify for all my birds. Thanks for the reminder.
Guest
ooooh Shirl, I want some ex batts but mother says no! She thinks they will be thinking about their suffering all the time.

helenarees
I've had my 6 ex batts a week today and they seem so thrilled to be scratching around the cube run (I've just ordered my second run extension for them!), their feathers are growing back already and I've had loads of eggs from them. I'm really thrilled to have them and I'm so glad I can offer them a decent home and life. Helena
