I have two friends with Marfan, and they're both getting along fine.

When I went to have a mammogram (found a lump ) they decided to do an ultrasound instead because of my dense boobs. I was SO relieved (also that the lump was just a chunky milk duct in an odd place).

do you mind me asking how old they are and do they have heart problems? I'm hoping you'll tell me they're in their seventies or even older!

One is my age (28) and one is 65. He has to be a little careful sometimes, as when he fell over once he had a fit (that's what you get for go carting) but other than that, he's fine.

65, wow! I'm 37 and though I've had to be careful with my health all my life, it's only the last 2-3 years that it's started to slow me down considerably. I've always had terrible arrythmia(sp?) and that was controlled by drugs which don't seem to be working any more. It's a degenerative condition and as discussed, has varying symptoms, not everyone is affected in the same way. My biggest fear is having to have valve replacement surgery, but 65, wow, that's cheered me up!

 

Sometimes I feel I have to defend myself from some people's attitudes as I've had people say to me "I know so and so with Marfans and he/she's fine etc etc" but like I say, people's symptoms and physiology varies plus as you get older it can get worse, I can't even go for a walk without feeling ill, never mind carting! Good on him!

 

Having said that, those 2 little girls and their mum in the news recently that need heart transplants, makes me feel guilty for even talking about my Marfans!

Is your daughter's friend double jointed at all?

 

Ooh I don't know. She was always dislocating her thumbs when she was little.

 

She once walked around with a fractured femur for a couple of weeks without appearing to have any pain when she was much younger.
