I do agree with what Loz says above - the only reason I know there are mice in the garden is cos the flippin' cat keeps catching them! I have never seen one out there, but he finds them reliably and frequently. They live everywhere, and however careful you are with corn and pellets they'll find something to eat. The mouse is at greater risk from your chickens, than they are from it.

 

When the cat brings them in alive, I use the humane trap (if I can get there in time!) and I trapped one successfully this way last night and released it this morning. (It was probably in the trap much more than an hour, because I had to go to bed - but it was still ok this morning.) I doubt if there's much point trapping a mouse outdoors though. You know what they say - there's no such thing as just ONE mouse!
