with all of this dreadful weather, and torrential rain our chickens run has become a flooded mudbath, despite having the winter AND summer shades on! they also have two perches to sit on above the ground, which they enjoy muchly! BUT i was really wondering if there is any danger of them getting foot rot or any other related disease ??????? tap back!

Ain't Nobody Here
I seem to remember a member posting about their chickens having a large lump of caked on mud under their feet which was tricky to get off. A few others had had the same thing. Apart from that, I'm not sure, sorry .
chickenanne
I've read that they can get a ball of dried mud stuck to their feet which eventually makes them lame. However that wouldn't develop really quickly, so if you kept an eye on them you could wash their feet if it started up, I guess. Otherwise, I've not found anything about mud /wetness damaging the feet. my grandfather used to dollop Stockholm Tar on his chickens feet when it was very wet, "just in case". I've no idea what it was in case of though - or if it worked!!

chelsea
we have feathered footed girls so we regularly wash the girls feet in warm soapy water...they dont seem to mind at all. Nothing to stop you doing this with any breed of chook really.
