The Dogmother
That's what I have against them Louise, the wholesale, needless slaughter. I know that it's just their nature, but I don't like it.
Guest
Yup, I agree. But if people are going to feed them, they will probably do it whether P@H stock fox food or not. Though I can't really see how the fox food would work anyway.... ? How would the foxes know it was for them? I suppose that unless there was already a fox visiting someone's garden, it would be pretty pointless. Rats would probably love it though. angelfire
Yes I also agree with Louise. I would understand much more if the fox killed just because it was hungry, but to kill just because it wants to..............
Guest
That's instinct and survival though. If I was a fox and happened across several potential meals.... Would I kill one and take it, then come back later and hope the others were still around. Or kill them all, take one and perhaps come back for more later - knowing they would still be there. The Dogmother
True enough, and I can understand it doing that, but my human sentiments still don't like it.
Guest
Yup - I don't like it either.... but have you tried reasoning with a fox? It's hopeless - they just keep running off with their paws in their ears going "la la la la la - can't hear you - la la la......"
The Dogmother
I can just see it now! Guest
Round our way they say, "Am I bovvered?" Actually, Charlton Athletic FC are just down the road from us and they recently brought in a marksman to shoot foxes that were digging up their pitch and being a general nuisance. They were attracted to the stadium by all the waste junk food. I think the story is at www.icsouthlondon.co.uk but the link won't work on my work PC, so I can't check. buffie
I can just see it now! I was doing that earlier in the office when they were all going on about football Anyway, where's this advert/gaffe Buffie? I want to knwo what it's all about. Oh yes Clare but first... Grd...Bloomin' eck thought I'd explained it already. Fox food in shops adds to the folks thinking 'oh lovely I'll be kind and feed foxes and not just hedgehogs', foxes aren't in need of our help they manage quite well. They aren't meant to be matey with us humans...for their own survival they need to be cautious. They don't think oh nice I've got some rather pukka grub here so that tasty bird (Sorry) next door isn't of any interest to me. The feeding will only encourage it to strike. Once again just my view and love the fact we can all think whatever we like and be friends eh Clare The poster outside P@H has a funny error or lets say the graphics person thought 'oh a charity poster, blue cross, I'll have a laugh but it will get picked up before going to print', well it hasn't and ok look at the boxers dog tag and you'll see what I mean. Mikey was just looking to see if it had a name and well mades us giggle. Have asked them to contact me and tell me what they think BBx

buffie
Right, now Clare knows I'll enlighten you. I don't think this is too rude but mod if you require. Picture the scene. A rather gorgeous large boxer dog is posing next to a smiley blue cross charity worker. It's a big promotion for Pets at Home to tell the public of it's good work with this charity. If you look at the dog tag closely there is an inscription and you just want to know his/her name is it Bruno or Cleo or Tyson or... No the inscription reads... I've Farted! Classic! Guest
We'll all have to hurry to view it now before it's removed. Hubby walks past most evenings, but he won't have the camera with him! I imagine they'll remove the posters fairly quickly!
Cinnamon
What an entertaining & interesting thread! Heres my take on the Fox issue. I live in the country, & we very rarely see a Fox.I have seen 5 in my 15 years here - 4 in the last year. We even once had one come to rest panting & exhausted under my holly bush after being chased by the local hunt. To see a fox is for me a real thrill.......they are beautiful creatures & I too have a live & let live attitude (unless it comes to spiders....) I would get the same pleasure from seeing a fox as I did seeing a herd of wild deer in my front garden yesterday,or a badger last week But then again I have never found bits of chicken all over my lawn after a fox attack Here where I live my neighbour hunts & shoots squirrels, which upsets me terribly. But I have learnt to accept that it is part & parcel of living in a nice rural village amoungst people who have lived here all their lifes. No one is ever going to agree on the fox issue, especially those who have lost their pets in a ruthless attack. It is just such a shame that the foxes seem now to be so much more prevelant in towns & cities, & have to kill or scavange for their food. I would not but Fox food, for the simple reason that it encourages foxes towards the house which cannot be a good thing. That & it would attract rats too ,which have also bypassed my live & let live attitude!

Richard T Maybe they'd let my chickens stay there during the week then.... no foxes, protected by a marksman, and a lovely green pitch to scratch on.... heaven I think mine have forgotten what grass looks like. Curbs wouldn't mind some lodgers when the pitch isn't in use, I'm sure
Cate in NZ
On the fox issue I'm very much with Buffie on this one. I have to say that a wild fox is a lovely animal, it's the mangy, malnourished urban foxes who have no fear of humans that concern me. Where I live I have a wood behind me, and I know there are foxes in there, but we rarely see them, (except the occasional one splattered by a car on the main road near by) I'm cautious with regards to my hens safety, but the foxes keep away until dark, and I sincerely hope it stays that way. Foxes are wild animals, they shouldn't be encouraged to become dependent on humans, whether directly by being given fox food, or indirectly, scavenging litter outside take-aways. Only my opinion of course. I do know of someone who keeps chickens who buys cheap supermarket chickens which she then throws out for the foxes every day She apparently claims that this keeps the fox away from her hens- never lost one yet to a fox This is a friend of a friend, but I'm assured not apocryphal, and I was absolutely horrified. The friend who repeated this to me thought that she was giving me a great piece of advice very soon after I got my first 2 hens. Friend was hurt when I finally spluttered out my, probably too honest opinon, along the lines of great idea, lets support 2 of my most hated items, supporting the battery hen industry and encouraging foxes to become dependent on humans for survival Hadn't thought about the rats argument though, good point. I might visit P@H soon, catch that poster before it goes and suggest to any possible fox food customers that it might encourage rats as well as foxes, see how that goes down
Guest
My husband scoured P@H last night but could not find the poster. Maybe it's localised or maybe they've acted very quickly!
chocchick
Surely P@H are selling fox food out of ignorance rather than actually being ? I suppose they can't justify foxes are a "pet" though I could see that feeding any animal would encourage it to the area GRD, which is not good for
Mel (& Paul)
What a great discussion! I LOVE foxes - but wouldnt want them in my garden. I think because we live in a semi rural position and have three woggles they seem to stay clear (I hope I am not tempting fate......) The problem is that many people in the towns feed them so they are no longer afraid of humans and can act as a pest to those who own chooks (or rabbits / guinea pigs etc.)
Guest
I could see that feeding any animal would encourage it to the area GRD, which is not good for Yes, *I know*!!!! chocchick
but, ..... oh I give up. So to summarise, foxes are nice, but people that feed them and P@H are as they encourage people to feed foxes that may or may not anyway?!
