Guest
only just got round to doing this myself In the chicken out newsletter in January it said... "Free Range Challenge no 1: Snap your local supermarket! Whilst Sainsbury’s and Waitrose have reported a massive effect of our programmes and campaign on their free range chicken sales, certain other supermarkets have claimed that we haven’t made much impact on the demand for free range chicken. Yet from all over the country we’re hearing reports that free range chicken is flying off the shelves, wherever it is on sale. If it really is the case that the supermarkets are struggling to supply the increased demand then that’s fantastic – it proves that when consumers are armed the facts they will shop with their conscience. And that is great news for chickens, as supermarkets will ask their suppliers to invest in new free range farms to meet the increased demand. But we need proof! We need YOU to show us the evidence that Britain really has got Free Range Fever. So when you are next in your local supermarket, please take a picture of their free range poultry section and send it to us. A still or a video clip from your mobile phone will be fine. A digital snap or clip from a video camera is even better. Please also take a close up of any signs explaining why they are out of stock. And then send your shots over to us via email to: campaign@chickenout.tv. And don’t forget to tell us who you are, and where and when your pictures were taken. If you’d like to include a short video clip of yourself or a friend explaining why you/they support the campaign, and/or what effect you think we’re having on your local chicken outlets, that would be great too." So, this is our pic taken tonight in Asda, The little green ticket to the left of the free range sign says “sorry we’ve temporarily run out of this product”. I'll be sending it on over to Hugh, hope you'll do it too?
Martin B
They must have thought you were barking mad when they saw you taking that picture!! Might go and have a look for myself later.
Tina C
Be surreptitious if you decide to do this - otherwise be prepared, at the very least, get thrown out of the shop - supermarkets (all shops) are very protective of 'commercial secrets' and I think they are entitled to make you delete the photos as you are on 'private' property and should seek permission before photographing anything (even the exterior of the store or the car park). But its a great idea. But, as a vegetarian, I don't frequent the meat sections of supermarkets so I won't be doing it!
Snowy
Wish I'd seen this yesterday! Don't often frequent Tesco these days, but last night needed to stock up on some non food essentials. The sign by the (empty) free range chicken shelves said something like " we are trying to source further supplies of this product to meet demand created by certain recent TV programmes" It sounded like they were most upset with the programmes concerned and it was all THEIR fault there was no chicken left! I used to do all my local shopping at Booths in Torrisholme, and occasionally visit the one just south of Lancaster (? Galgate) Sorry - bit of reminiscing there! (I loved Booths shops )
emu
Snowy, they are currently in process of constructing a £6M store on a site in Garstang.Going to be fab. They still do the cheese and wine tasting weeks as well and always have good recipe ideas. I usually visit the Garstang store as nearest to me but if going to Preston,I go to the Penwortham branch which is nice too. You'll have to take a tripdown memory lane in the Summer(if we get one) Global warming bring it on!
