Hellcat
Helen, I hope you have a brilliant time - take plenty of G&B as well as the wine Thick warm socks and wooly hats are a must at theis time of the year. If your head and feet are warm when you go to bed then the rest of you will be too. Have a fab time - I'm very jealous! Love, Cookie. xx Your not jealous really, are you? You just be mad! No, seriously, we'll be fine and I know the kids will love it. Atrip to Dartmouth and Paignton Zoo is on the cards, the old man and his mate want to re-live their training days and take the kids and say, look here's where daddy breached his first hull... etc, etc, yawn, yawn. I'm a bit worried about 5 of 5 as he's so little, but we'll be ok. Its just a bit cold for me, I prefer warmer climes.
Happymama
I LOVE Camping! WE've got a Khyyam XXL - it's huge, standing room in the middle, very fast erect (when we're sober or not bone-weary from a 8 hr drive with dogs and kids) and can sleep 10, but we have all the bedroom linings possible so we configure it accordingly for each trip. The girls (twins) go in a single together, just big enough for two travel cots!, and their brother goes in the single next door, and we have the opposite side of the tent in a double or a single+single with the wall tied up (bigger!). We pay the £3.50 or so extra for electricity and take a toaster; a radio/cd; a light and a mini fridge (coolbox variety). We also take a two bar 2kW heater and have been known to leave it on one bar all night in the Lakes one September - for the dog, of course. We're off to Cornwall - Perran Porth - camping again this year for two weeks, always take the dog (ours laid to rest two weeks ago and currently residing on the kitchen windowsill awaiting sunshine and good weather. We're looking for another/s now) and have a great time. We have all the good stuff, it's all clogging up the garage, but it's nice to be able to just pick up a box or three and sling it in the trailer and go, rather than having to strip the kitchen down. I fondly remember my Raleigh 14. Blue, it was, and did a lot of miles. Ossett to Dewsbury/Wakey/Mirfield/Thornhill/and beyond in the 6 week summer hols in the 70's. Popcorn
HM, I spent all of my childhood camping in Cornwall - Perrenporth being a fave of Mum and Dad's too. We go somewhere every year in the tent, usually Wales these days or around Derbyshire, but we are hoping to upgrade our two man tent to a family one so we can go for longer stretches further afield now we have little one on the way. Hellcat
Getting closer! Gretting nervouser! But I am comforted by the fact that the weather looks to be set fair for the weekend. Fan heater added to the growing pile by the door!
spacedhopper
Can you still buy Raleigh Burners ? i would love to get hold of a super burner (gold one, right ?) At the risk of derailing this thread (very briefly)..! I can report that Raleigh do still make a "Burner" but it is no real relation to the bike that you will remember from the early 80s. You need to check out my website; "Dan's Raleigh Burner Resource" this page from the '83 Brocchure has a nice pic of the Super... http://www.dtrcartwright.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Burner/83_04.htm "Survivor" Super Burners come up every so often on eBay but it is the most poorly represented bike in terms of the current scene becuase the original plastic gold superchrome coating does not age well and it has proved to be a real problem to replicate on a restoration. Is that bash at Wollaton Hall to do with the burners or is it just a camping bash, i only live 15 minutes away from Wollaton so i might pop by. That picture of the super burner takes me right back, i had that exact model, strip all the gold off and put blue mags on it, it looked sound, sold it for £35, wish i still had it. Was just thinking about it the other day and i saw your post, spooky. Is there a special club for Burner fanatics ?
Cookie
Your not jealous really, are you? You just be mad! I really am jealous actually Really! I have been complaining to OH that we should have booked a funky campsite somewhere for Easter. Next year As a result of this thread I made DS and DD dig out their thermal vests and leggings from last year and try them on to see if I need to buy any more before our first trip! (Happily DD's all still fitted and all but one set of DS's still fitted) Have a most excellent time (and dash back to let us know how you got on!) Love, Cookie. xx
spacedhopper
That looks sound Dan, will have to pop by, are there any stalls on cause i got a cracking Burner t shirt off ebay the other day, just wondered if they were selling parts and things. Might have a go starting with a frame sounds a good idea, is it easy to get parts ? i know on Ebay there are a few bits will have to take another look. Craig Schofield, that took me back a bit, a blast from the past, can remember him from all the magazines at the time. Hopefully see you there mate. Cookie
Helen, How did the trip go? Just how cold were you?? There was snow in Kent & Sussex last night Love, Cookie xx
Cate in NZ
Apparently there was up to 5" of snow around Tunbridge Wells last night. I couldn't believe my eyes when I kept seeing snow covered cars on the road this morning on my way to work Helen, I've lost the plot with this thread a bit and can't remember where you were going camping... it surely wasn't Kent or Sussex.... was it Camping isn't my idea of fun at the best of times, but camping in the snow.... with children I hope that you had a great time, and that it was warm whichever part of the country you went to
Hellcat
O-kay. We did it. went lunchtime on Friday, came back 9.30 pm on Sunday. I have just about defrosted. Our first camping excursion as a family, and it pains me to say it but, actually it wasnt as bad as I thought. The kids (well, the older two) absolutely LOVED IT! It helped that we went with friends and their two boys are the same age (sort of). River Dart Park is excellent and not at all hard core. It had a leccy hookup - this means a hairdryer and a kettle and a fan heater. 3 ticks. It had plenty of loos and showers and sinks in the amenity block, along with a changing station for Ethan, and a sink shaped as a bath for babies! Although I didnt use it , what a good idea! It had a laundry room with washers, dryers and a fridge and freezer, so if the cool blocks in the thermos box ever defrosted, you could chill them down. It was all clean and up together. IT WAS FREEZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ethan spent both nights in with me in my bag, as when he woke for a feed he was lke a block of ice! Not good when breast feeding and they stick their freexing hands up your nice warm sweatshirt! Brr. the older two never even noticed the cold though and after a couple of G and T's, neither did I, mostly! It was ok and we will go again for a long weekend, BUT not in april! Too cold! as we drove home on Sunday night we drove through snow on the Blackdown Hills, and our friends stayed on for two more nights! Coming to our house to defrost and have roast chicken tomorrow! (Tescos, free range corn fed, not ours!). so there you go.
motherhen
Great news Helen - if you can enjoy camping in a cold April, then you'll love doing it in the warm I've also done the breastfeeding in a tent at some ridiculously low temperature, so I really empathise with you on that one
Hellcat
Now, motherhen, I never said I enjoyed it, but the kids and the grown up kid did and it was tolerable (ok, I think were my words). Really did enjoy catching up with my lovely friend Steph over G and T and wine when the little darlings were all tucked up in bed Our tent was really good, if anything a bit too big. I will never be a fan of camping as theres nowhere to put the bath and the cooker is too small, but I havent completely written it off. Bl**dy cold tho'! motherhen
Pick a hot week in June/July and I promise you will be hooked Watch August thought - the nights get cold even if the days are warm
Hellcat
We were planning to camp at the Omlet get together in August. I understand there may be a few of us. Pick a camp site and take over...
Cookie
Helen, So glad you enjoyed it! And that you didn't get frostbite... I'll echo Motherhen and say that doing it in the summer when its warm will be a totally different experience. And its definitely eaier as the children get older, so once Ethan is running around you'll be able to spend more time with the G&Ts and less time cleaning up after the kids Love, Cookie. xx
Linda
Well done Helen! If you managed the freezing temperatures and a little baby for your first camping trip you'll be a great camper! I agree with Motherhen about going earlier on in the summer - the evenings are warmer and longer. It makes such a difference. I'm looking into taking our tent to the south coast at the beginning of the summer holidays to make the best of the longer evenings. I like all this positive feedback - makes me feel much less weird!
