My eco solution to rat problems

Have just bought a second hand eglu and was wondering if anyone had tried putting the fabric shades in the washing machine? Don't want to take a chance in case they get ruined!

I'd wash it by hand if I were you and hang it on the line to drip.

 

I found they disintegrated if I used the power washer on them, so I imagine the pounding action and spinning of the washing machine might be too much for them too.

 

The sun causes them to get very weather beaten and fragile.

I have washed mine in the machine on a cool wash and tumble dried it on a cool dry for a few minutes also (and kept an eye on it in the tumble dryer)

 

I tumble dry everything so the shade is no exception!!

ooh, glad you asked that question Sasha, because I've been pondering this! The shade is the one thing that doesn't wear very well ... only a year and mine is more khaki than green, and very scruffy looking.

 

Still, for £12 you can get a new one. I think if I bought another one I'd put it UNDER one of the Ikea plastic shower curtains - it might still fade but it wouldn't get quite so grubby.

 

I might try a hand wash when the weather's warmer.

There was talk of Omlet bringing them out in new fabric; I haven't heard any more on that though. I'll ask next time I see the boys.

I have stuck my winter and summer shades in the washer several times and they have come up lovely

To be honest, mine is so scruffy I might replace it anyway (if I don't sell the Eglu, that is ) so I might risk washing it, and just buy a new one if it falls apart.
