Sarah B
Had my girls since the 28th Feb and not a sign of a crouch LOL, Omlet man said they were very young and fiesty at about 16/17 weeks max, so I'm really hoping I might get a result in the next week or two? They are not earning their keep at the moment, Madras even pecked my finger yesterday boo hoo
Sarah B
Came home from work to find my first egg in the nestbox! I think it was from Madras my Pepperpot though I have seen neither of them crouch?? It is 45g and perfectly formed! It was just there in the nestbox! How do they know where to lay it? I thought my hubby had put it in there for a joke but he didn't! I'm sooooooo pleased!!!! Clever hens
hilda-and-evadne
Came home from work to find my first egg in the nestbox! Yay! - you got your two a few days later than I did, and I've been looking out especially on the forum these last three days for a post from you to say that your first egg had arrived. I didn't see either of my hens crouch either but Hilda is now behaving like top chook (Evadne still not laid but she is definitely younger) and so-o-o-o greedy. How do they know where to lay it? I wondered about that, too. Anyway, congratulations.

Your eggs are whoppers Claire! I'm hoping I get another for the weekend so me and OH can have one each. I think for me it will have to be either boiled or fried for the 1st egg! PennyTikkaNoodles
Well done Madras! It really is a wonderful feeling finding the first egg isn't it. We are just waiting for our two gingernut rangers to start. Penny has been crouching for the last 10 days but no sign of an egg. Tikka isn't crouching and doesn't look ready to start laying. Noodle (our Pepperpot) on the other hand hasn't missed a day since she started laying on the 13th March. All of her eggs have been a similar size - haven't got a decent set of scales. I'm sure they haven't got any bigger yet but they taste perfect. I really need the other two to help out as I'm supposed to be making a pavlova this weekend for a party and I need 5 eggs. I only have 2 of Noodles left and I'm determined not to buy any in the supermarket Come on Penny and Tikka!!!
Sarah B
I'm convinced my gingernut Tikka is at least a couple of weeks off yet she is definitely much younger than Madras. I hope you get a result from Penny or Tikka for your pavlova!
SharonX
Hi everyone, Glad to see Clarabel is finally laying & has put you out of your misery! My other 2 are laying now, Ruby laid her first one on Good Friday & has laid everyday since & Poppy laid her first yesterday. Came home to find 3 in the nesting box so now they are all earning there keep
Reikiranf
Fab news all round! Clarabelle your girls have got off to a great start with such good sized eggs. I'm a bit confused now as we got our third egg yesterday but it's tiny and weighs 33 grams! It's darker than the other two eggs so does that mean that a different chook laid it? My DH thinks I'm nuts as I keep updating the family on everyone else's eggs on the forum too, I just think it's so exciting
muzzie
YAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!! CLARABEL LAID TODAY!!!!! A very respectable egg too, just over 6cm long and roughly 65g. In fact, bigger than the medium free range ones I've got in the fridge. Congratulations on the first egg
Sarah B
Hi All, My Pepperpot Madras is a little marvel! Another egg today - 48g and when I went to give them some mixed corn she crouched right in front of me! How funny I've never seen it before She stayed like it for a while so I could give her a good stroke. Bet she was dissapointed I'm not a cockerel but at least she got some mixed corn! She's eating for Britain now as well!
Clarabelle
We ate three of Clarabel's eggs today, and quite delicious they were too. Fried, on toast. The first was a double yolker as expected, so my son Jeremy had that one. She laid again today and they are gradually getting bigger, though that first one was a whopper at 74g! I'm convinced Annie is going to lay very soon, she was crouching like mad today and I found her in the nest cup this evening making funny noises. Sarah B
Hi Claire, I have 2 small eggs now not really big enough for a boiled egg and soldiers but I think me and OH are going to have them fried on Sat morning? Might do a bit of bacon and bread and butter?
PennyTikkaNoodles
Yippeee! Penny laid her first egg today. Well I think it was Penny. She has been crouching for the last 2 weeks! Came home to find 2 eggs. Noodle must have laid in the nesting box and Penny laid on the roosting bars. Unfortunately it has a small crack/hole in the top presumably from getting knocked. I'm hoping that she will lay the next one in the nesting box even if Noodle has got there first. Our first 2 egg day - what a wonderful thing. Nearly have enough eggs to make that Pavlova for a birthday party tomorrow!
Sarah B
YAY!!!!!! PTK! How brill that one of your gingers is laying now as well! OH is off work today and he called to tell me Madras has laid another egg today! That's 3 eggs in 3 days all from one hen! She must be worn out LOL Good luck for the pavlova! PennyTikkaNoodles
What are we like!.... I never dreamt I would ever have chickens let alone get over excited about seeing an egg! Noodle has only missed 1 day since she started laying so I'm sure Madras will keep going now. I've also just ordered one of those egg skelter things in my excitement of having a 2 egg day! OH will think I've gone nuts when it arrives! I don't think having chickens will ever save you money but it is definitely an enjoyable experience. When you get your skelter can you post a pic? My OH thinks I'm nuts. I dont care - love my hens!! You are right about the money side though, all the things I have spent now including the Eglu and Run have come to well over £500 - not told OH
redhotchick
Hey! Congratulations Sarah B. Won't be long before Tikka is laying too. Hope you enjoy those eggs. I've been eating my Bella's 40g eggs poached on toast. They are so tiny! I love them though. Small but perfect!
Sarah B
Hi Cathy, I have 3 small eggs now and I'm torn between poached and fried for our first taste tomorrow (I think they are too small for boiled with soldiers)! I think it will be fried as it's easier to cook without spoiling than poached - well it is for me!
Reikiranf
We've had four eggs now I think that Yum Yum may have laid an egg as we had a tiny one that weighed 33 grams on Wednesday and it was a darker colour than the previous two and then yesterday we had another egg that weighed 49 grams so I think I have two girls laying now. I think it's Yum Yum as despite being the smallest her comb has overtaken Lulu's and is much redder The eggs will be fried for breakfast on Sunday
koo2cat
We had our first egg on Thurs, 2 weeks to the day since our Omlet hens arrived. And we have had 1 egg every day since! Same hen we think - all very exciting!

Clarabelle
Hi everyone, Glad to hear that lots of us are enjoying our hens' first eggs now. We tried them poached today but I think I prefer fried or boiled. It was our first 2 egg day today as Annie laid her first egg this morning. It is a really pretty, dark brown little thing, weighing in at 47g. She laid early and then we saw Clarabel go into the Eglu a bit later on and lay her one. PennyTikkaNoodles - did you get enough eggs for your pavlova in the end? I hope the birthday party went well. Sarah - I'm glad you had a lovely breakfast this morning, the crouching thing is really funny isn't it? Both mine do it when I approach and I don't even have to be standing really close. They are so easy to pick up and stroke now, bless em! They are definitely noisier now though and more bolshy when I open the back door, I find it really difficult to keep them out of our living room as they barge in! As for the expense of it all, we're doing a cost-benefit analysis of the whole chicken keeping thing (how sad eh?). My DH is proudly plotting the weight of eggs each day and we'll know when we have broken even as the colour of the numbers in our spreadsheet will change! Sarah B
Congrats on Annies first egg - I cant wait till I'm 2 a day! I'm hoping it wont be too long as over the past day Tikka's wattles and combs have really reddened
