Checklist ??

Been reading this thread with interest :)

Our chooks are arriving on Tuesday and I will only be getting a bag of feed with them

Sorry to have so many queries but I'm getting a little worried that I'm not properly prepared for our girls arrival

Lou I think I am just being my paranoid self. I'm sure most of the things on my list can be bought as and when. I'm just trying to minimise delivery costs if possible and build a nice set up for when they get here. Hubby is building run as I type - feel like I need to have some part in it

Dont worry about getting everything before they arrive. I would describe the essentials as feed, grit, Redmite powder, a wormer and maybe poultry spice just to get you going - all the other bits and pieces you can build up as you go along. :D

When I got mine, I had an eglu, 2 chooks, a bottle of citricidal, a small amount of grit and half a bag of layers pellets.

Obviously, since then I have acquired a whole cupboard full of supplements, medicines, preventatives, alternative therapies and and additional accompaniments.

You certainly won't need everything straight away, and although it's a good idea to get a few bits in beforehand (unlike me!), you can accumulate other stuff as you go along.

I buy my hemcore, pellets, corn, apple cider vinegar and garlic powder from a nearby horsey place.

I've also got a list of websites I've used (or kept a note of) for various other stuff. It may be a help starting you off (you'll just need to look at each one to see what the product is, I'm afraid  ).

Re citricidal, it's useful for snuffly hens (and for general health, I think). I tend to put a squirt in their treat bowl once a week or so if I remember.

I think I got mine on ebay (as well as grit/oystershell, dried mealworms, limestone flour, metal bin for feed :) ). So try ebay for everything too just in case :) .

Garlic powder - you definitely need garlic powder :) . And how about dried mealworms?! No problem getting them back into their run using those  .

Thanks ANH :) Will add the garlic powder and I've already bought some dried mealworms as I found them for £1.99 a tub in Home Bargains the other day.

If your girls get through a lot, you may want to check out Ebay - you can get larger amounts for a reasonable price  .

Ooh, thanks as I thought £1.99 was a bargain price so was going to stock up. Just wish I'd a firm date for the chucks as I'm getting very impatient-lol although the wait will be worth it :)

Sorry...me again

Do you generally buy diatom, red mite powder, garlic, grit, corn, ciricidal etc., etc. from different places or are most things I may need available from one/two places? Best to buy from Omlet and get delivered when Eglu/chooks arrive...seems like somethings available Ebay?

I feeling very nervous now and after reading another post this morning my stomach churning...yikes :? Just thinking maybe I bitten off more than I can chew...so hope not though :?

So sorry to bang on about how anxious I am right now

Thank you.

Lou

If you're waiting for an Omlet delivery, I agree, get anything they stock that you really need at the same time. Plenty of time to do research on prices and P&P later when you're a bit more settled.

"Anxious" is definitely normal

You definitely haven't bitten off more than you can chew - once you've had them a week, you'll realise how easy it is and how little work keeping chickens entails  .

It's fun, honest :D .

Snoxy, I've just started pricing everything up including p & p to see which is going to be the cheapest option. Proving a bit difficult though as I haven't yet found one place that stocks everything I want :? I'm struggling with the bedding at the moment as well as I haven't come across a local supplier yet.

Thank you...I will take a 'chill' pill now and give Omlet a ring tomorrow morning although I may have left it a bit late as Eglu/chooks due to arrive Tuesday

I did get in a bit of a panic :?

Thanks for calming me down :D

Lou :D

p.s. Heaven only knows how I manage with 4 children?
