eggypeggy
Hello, was wondereing if anyone has a Skyline or a white star. My local poultry farm will have some in in a couple of weeks. One produces white eggs and one blue, not sure which is which, but wondered if they are good breeds to own?
Snowy
Hi. Both the skyline and white star are hybrid hens. The skyline should lay blue eggs, although supposedly only 80% of birds lay a blue egg, the rest will lay a pastel coloured egg. The whitestar is a prolific layer of large, pure white eggs. Again, supposedly, white and blue egg layers do tend to be a bit more flighty than brown egg layers - a bit more nervous and less easy to handle. However, in a garden setting and with regular handling it is possible to overcome these traits (and all hens will do anything for food ), most people who have them are delighted with them. Hope this helps.
Phosphorus
The breeder I am getting my chooks from warned us off White Stars as we were beginners - it might be because of the children wanting to pick them up though - she has friendlier birds. Have heard great things about Skylines - just can't get one from the same breeder when I want them
eggypeggy
That's great to know, thank you for your reply Snowy. I already have two Miss pepperpots from Omlet, so we're going to be adding these two. I'm expecting a rough settling period for the newies, hopefully won't be too bad. It's true, I am the food lady, they always come running for nibbles!
eggypeggy
It'll be fine if they are a bit harder to handle, one of my existing chooks is very good at evading us, so we're used to it. The other one, not so clever! if you know what i mean. I have got children, but my eldest child isn't quite brave enough to pick up the chickens yet, so not a problem there. Just quite excited about having different coloured eggs. Think they'll suit us fine.
Snowy
My friend has six chickens, including a skyline and a whitestar, plus 4 very young children (all under school age ). They are fine. The skyline is the oldest of the bunch and quite happy being handled. The whitestar just keeps out of the way - they call her the road runner but she comes running for food and goes back into the pen just fine!
