Tara123
One of my girls is moulting and I have run out of tuna, which I have been giving her for the extra protein. I'm going shopping tomorrow to buy some organic cat food and some more tuna but I have found 2 tins of sardines in my cupboard, could I give them that instead? Its the ones in tomato sauce and it also contain sunflower oil. If I give it a good rinse first could they have it? Are sardines high in protein? Any advice on sardines would be great, ta
Egluntyne
I don't see why not tbh. They are full of omega wotsists aren't they? I would rinse them though.
chickenanne
How much salt is in the sauce? I'd be really concerened about that. Only issue I can see though!
Chickaboo
What about the bones? I know we can eat them, but not sure about hens??
Egluntyne
If you rinsed them the salt wouldn't be a problem, and if you mashed them, the bones would virtually disappear. I would give it a try.

superjules
Wow! I bet they'll love sardines. I can always taste them for hours afterwards though.
Olly
The canning process makes the bones soft so they should be fine. My chickens have eaten a whole mouse before now - I can't see sardines presenting any problem!
MrandMrsG
This is new one for me; being fairly new to this chicken keeping caper, I had no idea you can feed them fish - I give sardines to the dogs but I guess it must be good for the chooks too
Tara123
Update on the sardines They absolutely loved them I rinsed them and mashed them up and they loved it more than tuna. So its a big thumbs up from my girls and no runny pooies either
