D'OH! - HELP PLEASE :-)

Recommended Posts

D'OH

Our Eglu and 3 girls arrived at 7.35am this morning and I can't believe after reading this forum for days I couldn't remember what to put in the nesting box and droppings tray? Think I went into panic mode for a minute as it looked like the VERY BIG BLACK PP was crouching earlier

Omlet delivery chappie advised straw or sawdust in the nesting box (I've read straw is best avoided?). Don't have any hemcore, aubiose?, easybed at mo so I shredded some paper and put in nesting box...is this ok for time being?

Is it best to put few sheets newspaper in droppings tray or nothing at all?

Thank you :D

Lou :)

Don't worry Lou - your mind goes blank when faced with it all! :D Shredded paper is absolutely fine in the nest box (it doesn't really need anything, but I think they do like something a bit more 'nesty' to lay in!) Plus if they do poo in it, it can be scooped out in the paper and composted. Again, you don't really need anything in the poo trays, but a layer of newspaper or a sprinkling of aubiose or hemcore does help to absorb any wet poos and makes cleaning out a bit easier.

Hope you have a lovely day watching your new chooks! 8)

I have a large bale of wood shavings that I also use for the guinea pigs. I was going to use this and straw (we have some left from when my horse was stabled with laminitus (clean)). I thought straw was ok to use? What should we use instead?? Clare x Have a lovely day with your new ladies! x

I use straw or shredded paper in the nest box (only use the straw as I was given it) but have had no problems. It is all emptied out every few days anyway, so i don't think it is in there long enough to harbour any mites or mould or cause problems. I know some say otherwise, but I can't remember the reasons now. I still use it anyway! :D Again, not sure about shavings - I think there is a potential dust problem, but if they are just used in the bottom of the poo tray to absorb poo there may not be a problem. Don't know if they would compost down as well as the aubiose/hemcore.

My cube arrived an hour or so ago as well - can't put it up yet though as two kiddies around (inquisitive young ones who will run off with parts  ) and DH is at work.

Will have to sit and pine

CONGRATULATIONS on the arrival of your purple cube :D

No names yet...think I will have to put 3 pieces paper in a hat so the boys don't fuss over which girl will be theirs  Ellin wont mind either way 8) Think it was just meant to be that the two PP look so different otherwise we wouldn't know which one is which 8)

Have taken few pics...will get DH to help me post them as he is computer whizz :D

Enjoy your day...it will fly by :D:wink:

Where did you order your Bokashi bran from please?

Ellin is our daughter...she was going to be called Clara for ages before she born but then one day my DH suggested Ellen...but we adapted it to combine both great grandmas names...we took the 'Ell'...from Ellen and 'in' from Win(ifred) :D It does suit her 8) She is our miracle baby as she was born at 26 wks, 1 day weighing just 1lb 14.5oz/870g  She loves the girls already  I was just outside taking some more pics and she said take picture me Mummy as she crouched down behind the run...ah bless...I try and post later

How many children do you have?

Ordered BB from https://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk

not sure if it is the cheapest but got a 3kg bag for £14 plus delivery (£3).

My daughter is called Erin that is what made me smile when you said Ellin  Wow what a survivor for 26 weeks

I have two, one girl (6) and one boy (3). They are really looking forward to the chooks arrival - they are picking one each.

I really love the name Erin :D My best friend back in Colchester has just become an Auntie and her nephew is called Ellis...which I like too 8)

Can't wait to see James and Christian's faces tonight...they'll be home about 4 pm :) They are huge Scooby Doo fans but really hope they don't choose Scooby and Doo for the girls names

Thanks for the info re. Bokashi bran  Just rang the people I get my rabbit feed, straw, hay etc. they don't sell Bokashi bran but do limestone flour, garlic powder etc. :D

Have fun with your children :D

Erin's hen was going to be called Daphne for ages - now it is going to be Rosie apparantly :D My son wants to call his Tom (or Jerry it alternates from day to day).

Just made chocolate fudge with them - well mainly me making it but.... have to make sure I don't end up eating it all as well

OMG...don't believe it the first name Christian chose for his chook was Thomas or Tom :D I reminded him they are girls...his latest thoughts are Fawn or Charlotte 8) James immediately chose the BIG black chook and he likes the name Cleopatra :) I think DH and I will end up choosing a name for Ellin's PP ...probably be Fifi :)

SCRUMMY...chocolate fudge my fav...save us a bit

Hi Snoxy,

At least you will be able to tell them apart. I'm getting four Miss Pepperpots and am worried that they will look so alike that I won't be able to know one from the other. :?

Ours look totally different. One has a a full collar of ginger feathers, the other just has ginger feathers on her breast. Our problems is the gingernuts. We have 3, two of which are almost identical.

You could try emailing omlet to see if they can let you have chickens that are fairly easy to tell apart.

My three Miss Pepperpots were completely different in colour. One is a lovely bluey black, one has a golden head and neck and brown body and the third one (until she died :( ) was a speckeldy brown and gold. I think maybe Omlet try and make sure the colours vary, not sure though
