mayflower
Sooo funny this afternoon. Came home from work and went looking for eggs in the nest box. Pushed the cube roof from back to look in and the sun came streaming in, sooo, methinks! 'this is a good idea. I'll leave the roof pushed forward to give the cube fresh air' (safe in the large high run) Went to eat lunch when I heard such a commotion. Annie, was calling and calling, so went outside to see what all this noise was about. Annie was perched on the top of the grey part at the back of the cube crowing loudly, and looking like a cockeral on a weathervaine! Now, I thought she was frightened to fly down....seeing they are ex bats and free for only three and a half weeks, and this is high for an ex bat hen. However, after encouragement she flew down gracefully using her beautiful pale brown wings. She then was furiously talking to Tiny Lucy, who then went into the cube and did exactly the same thing. perched on the grey part of the cube complaining. So again, I encouraged her to fly down, and she did so...light as a feather. Then, they ALL started furiously talking 'at' me. I suddenly realised what I had done wrong. Because I had pushed the cube roof forward, I had created a roof over the ladder. They were unable to get enough 'lift' to get down and were telling me in no uncertain terms to correct it....which I did. Suddenly, all was peace again! How fantastic is that for hen communication! I rewarded them with an extra handful of corn. !

ajm200
That's so funny. I do sometimes wonder who's in charge as they very quickly learn to manipulate us and let us know what they want. Of course, being adoring chicken owners it's so easy to give in
The Pearsons
They certainly can let you know what they think! And don't they know some absolutely dreadful language? My Paxo likes to walk on the top of the cube and the ex-bats now copy her. She is not amused as she was the only one who could get up there until I got the ex-bats........ I did find Peckadilly attempting to climb chicken wire at the weekend though. More chance of me flying than her I have to say.

superjules
Sometimes I open up my henhouse in the morning and let them out through the big door and close it again forgetting to open their pophole door. DD's pekin, Yum-yum, always comes and tells me off for it! They are funny aren't they!
Keanie Bean
Its quite amazing how clever chickens really are. When I decided to get chooks I read up first and was expecting animals which were funny but quite stupid. How wrong was that book Sarah.x
