My eco solution to rat problems

We have had our Eglu delivered today and are debating whether to also have a convertor. But wanted to know how do you rake the run out as it is quite long?

 

i unerstand that for a proper clean we could unclip it, but for quick clean out how do you do it without dismantling?

We do it as a 2 person job, and lift the whole thing including eglu away, clean out and put it back. We've always done that and it seems the best way.

hubby used to clean the run whilst i was scrubbing the eglus.

 

He would do the run door end and rake that out and then he would go up the other end (where the eglu attaches) and rake out the other.

Is that for the proper clean out or general rake over?

Can I also ask do you peg your run down or just place it on the ground?

My run is pegged down with the screw in pegs sold by Omlet.

 

Andyman converted the screwing in device to be able to use it with the electric screwdriver. Super quick!!

I leave my run to fester as long as possible then lift it out of the way and do a proper clear out. With Aubiose I can rarely see the poos so raking them out seems a bit of a waste.

one time we used tent pegs for extra pegging down. When we made our "permanent run area" we put a layer of a couple of bricks around the perimeter of the run on the skirt bit, this also helped keep the hemcore in as my chooks like to kick hemcore around. I have seen some people put railway sleepers around their run.

 

Of course this isnt absolutely necessary...you tend to tinker a lot once you've got chickens!!

I actually went to visit Jules last week! Jules has a free range area around her Eglu (though she didn't have the converter then) which is netted. Our area will just consist of the Eglu with decking planks to edge it to prevent the Hemcore escaping.

I have 2 methods of cleaning out the run depending on whether I have help or not!

 

Method 1 - one person job:

Lift run by door end and swing round so it's away from the run site, leaving eglu in place.

Method 2 - two person job:

Each lift an end and move the whole thing to the side.

 

Both very simple and effective!

I'm thinking of taking off the eglu lid & poking my rake through the door to get at half the run, & then putting the rake through the run door to get to the other half.

My rake would just about reach the whole run area when I didn't have the convertor on .

 

I haven't tested yet whether my rake will fit through the eglu door.

 

Anyone know?
