buffie
Yes sad, any farming system that basically 'destroys' an animal in this way after 12 months is wrong so once again the death of a hen is letting everyone know that we must free range and abolish the cages. Chicken on a mission
I swapped to organic veg a while back and have felt guilty about it ever since, I should have changed our meat first as vegetable don't suffer Having scoured the internet for additive free meat, my friend who lives in New Zealand told me that a butchers 5 miles up the road from me does free range additive meat only so we are sorted now
Mel (& Paul)
Dont feel guilty little steps, one at a time - that's how you get there
motherhen
All the studies show that people who make a series of small changes in their lives, rather than a huge change in one fell swoop, are significantly more likely to keep up the changes. So you've been doing things in exactly the right way

PurpleHen
One of the best things about the newsletter is that it made me go and look at the site again - not been there for a while. We're completley free range in any eggs we buy, including when dining out, and also any chicken we eat. But is has made me think harder about all the "hidden" eggs we eat. For instance in pasta. So my next small change will be to try and buy only products that contain free range eggs. I think this will be quite hard - but I'm going to try
Aylana
Purplehen, I am trying to do the same thing at the moment, cut out all the hidden battery eggs. It is quite hard to do. If I have the money available I buy stuff from Marks and Spencers as they only use free range eggs in their own brand stuff. Good luck to you. Martin B
We do 90% of our shopping at M and S, so as a amily we cut out most of the hidden battery eggs!
PurpleHen
We don't have an M&S near us, which is a shame. They have bought site which is great, just on the way home from work, ut haven't developed it yet - it's been unused for about 18 months now and no sign of work yet But we do have a local farm shop which sells organic stuff - so I might investigate their stuff a bit further. However - this shop really is more expensive than M&S, which is a shame. They used to be reasonably priced but have slowly edging the margins up.... AnnieP
Perhaps this could be a new sticky: Free range products? Where people could post the names of products/brands that we know contain free range eggs/meat only? It would be great as a point of reference. Martin B
I was impressed the other da at the service station on way to Germany, i was looking at the sandwiches availbale and they had normal egg and cress anf free range egg and cress. More of the free range option had gone! This is a good sign. At least they gave you the option!

Great idea, but it would need to be a sticky In fact it's such a good idea I'll start it with a reply I had from the Soil Association
