Swiss Chick
Very interesting reed. Great stuff hope the EU will vote on banning hen batteries soon. Switzerland doesn't allow it anymore for quite some years now.

buffie
If you can print a copy for giving with eggs that would be great. I am doing that with my neighbours and sending it to friends and family via email . BBx
Mel (& Paul)
That's what I do too This week, with their four eggs, customers are getting a card with the girls pictures and names on them, a card telling people to visit the BHWT website and to keep chickens free range, a newsletter and a creme egg (well it is easter!) buffie
That's wonderful Mel, well done! BBx
Mel (& Paul)
It doesnt take a lot does it? And I am feeling particularly smug and virtuous as Mum has donated to BHWT rather than giving me a chocolate Easter Egg with my name on (after all, at my age I know my name, but am not so old that I cant remember it )
buffie
It's the fact it takes some effort that matters. It's thought as it's easy to pick up an egg and buy it if you have the money. We don't do Easter except for the holiday so we entertain and have a nice time. I have bought some G&B's but thats not unusual Daisie has her home made biscuits as do the girls. The puss kits will have prawns and I have made Mikey's mum some beeswax polish. We are going to see the Frank Sinatra Show, as it's our wedding anniversary on saturday, so very excited! Mel (& Paul)
Oh dear What are we like Paul and I read the newsletter last night and cried Particularly about the bit falling off the perch Southern softies
motherhen
Not softies - just animal lovers like the rest of us It's normal to get angry and upset over animal cruelty - and there is no other name for the battery hen industry
Louise
I am sure this will make some blood boil but never mind Near here is one of the largest battery productions in the UK a farm called Glenwrath run by John Campbell. He does also have a reasonable number of free range chickens as well and his flock totals about 500,000 birds at the moment. Last year he bough another farm in Blyth Bridge near here and BECAUSE OF PUBLIC DEMAND he wants to increase his free range flock to expand the entire operation to about 900,000 birds. As you can imagine people near the new farm don't want 400,000 free range chickens on their doorstep and have been fighting the planning application for the 10 sheds required to house the birds. Nothing remarkable in that I hear you cry. This last week the locals have been citing the dead swan in Fife as their reason to object as one of the 'neighbours' to the farm is west Linton Primary school. I don't know how geographically close it actually is though I have no idea what sort of noise and/or smell this sort of farming would create but before it was sold it was a livestock farm so how much different is it going to be. I couldn't believe that one dead swan can be cited to prevent this happening
motherhen
Totally unbelievable I'm sure these stupid nimbys wouldn't object to battery hens near them because they would be out of sight - grrrrrrrrrr - this sort of stupidity makes me soooo MAD
Louise
I knew it would ruffle feathers but I heard it on the news last night and was totally amazed Given the farm used to have a huge cattle herd (they won some big prize for a milker a few years ago) the place is massive so how can chickens be worse They live in the country and that is what you get in the country. I don't like or dislike the man who owns the place he is a business man and he does do a tremendous amount for the community so to keep trying to block plans to improve animal welfare is crazy

motherhen
The bit of good news tucked away in there, is that there is an increasing demand for free range eggs

Louise
Yes that's what I thought if the flock is to nearlly double with free rangers maybe the existing accomodation can shrink to accomodate more free rangers too
