I'm going to BUY cakes!

Recommended Posts

I give up! I tried cooking a cake for my hen party, I had to improvise a little with the ingredients, wrong type of apple, wrong type of nuts BUT the damned thing burned on top and never cooked inside - that oven is hideous! I even turned it down and left it in hoping the inside would cook but it didn't. Nice treat for the chooks today!

That would have been OK as I had a back up - a loaf of fruit bread in the breadmaker. Only slight improvisation, mixed spice instead of cinnamon. BUT its a long time since I used the breadmaker. I set it up to do it overnight and misread the instructions. It said that the fruit went in at the beeps which are at 2.57. I STUPIDLY forgot that the instructions are ALWAYS time left to cook rather than after time has passed. I got up when it had 50 mins left to cook - way past time to add the fruit. So its a no fruit loaf.

When I was at the boot sale yesterday I could have, should have bought a cake. Its another no cake hen party here for me today!

How annoying - have you tried an oven thermometer to check what temperature the oven is really at, you might find you need to adjust what you set it at.

Sounds as if it's a bit too hot, unfortunately what the oven says it is doing, and what is really happening inside, are sometimes quite a long way apart! You can get a metal thermometer for about a fiver, hang it inside and then check it every so often.

Does your oven have different options, i.e fan, radiant etc? If it does, it might be worth trying a different one of those. I'm sure your hen party people will be so excited about seeing chickens, they won't care about cake! Hope it goes well, the sun is shining here in North Essex.

My oven has lots of options - I thought I'd got the right one this time!

As for freecycle - its a flipping range cooker and anything smaller would leave a nasty hole in the kitchen. One day I'll get a new one, this one is soo annoying as its not actually wide enough to put two standard sized roasting tins in next to each other - meaning I heat a HUGE oven for a small tin - thats why I usually use Mums oven instead!

What about putting a peice of greaseproof paper/ baking paper over the top of the cake. It just stops the top from going too brown.

I have problems with this somtimes and have to make sure my oven is or low if its a biggish cake as the middle is gooey and the top too 'done' otherwise.

The peper put over the top seems to help.

The egg sandwich idea is a good one.
