Tessa the Duchess
I would like to start making my own yogourt. I really don't want to buy a yogourt making machine. So could some kind person tell me how? I used to make it years ago, but have completely forgotten amounts and what sort of milk to use. Thankyou. bronze
Any amount of milk I boil it up then let it cool to warm. Put in a spoonful of yoghurt (buy the first lot keep some from each batch after) then put it in a flask for 24 hours. Theres no exact science
bronze
Oh I got fed up of using a flask as the neck was too narrow so started putting it in a tupperware with lid in the airing cupboard
Tessa the Duchess
Thanks for this Bron. Do you use full fat milk? I would like to make fairly thick yogourt, does the consistency depend on how much yogourt you use to begin with? Tessa
Snowy
Not entirely sure Tessa, but I use semi skimmed milk and it makes a nice set yoghurt. I also use a wide necked food flask - perfect!
bronze
I use full fat becasue its what we have.
Tessa the Duchess
Thanks for this. I use semi skimmed so will give it a try with that. Tessa
Tessa the Duchess
Ok made some yougurt yesterday, just as Bron instructed. Result, total disaster, its hardly set at all, it looks like thin lumpy milk I used Yeo Valley organic probiotic yogourt, which should have been ok. I just realised I didn't put a tight fit cover on it, just a plate over the bowl, and I put right next to a radiator. What did I do wrong? Help! Lesley
It sounds like you may have overheated it? - it does go runny if you do that. sometimes I can make good yoghurt....... sometimes i have disasters.... - no rhyme nor reason. I use the Yeo Valley yoghurt as well.
Tessa the Duchess
Thanks Lesley, I probably didn't let it cool down enough I will have another go today. The chooks can have some of the 'disaster' in with their porridge. Tessa
