Catsareus
Hello. I have been keeping my two 'secondhand' chickens for a few months now and been getting along quite well. (They are 3 years old this summer). One isn't such a good layer and does occasionally lay a brittle shelled egg, although has access to oyster shell and crushed egg shell in their porridge. Anyway her last 2 eggs have been rough and covered with what I can only describe as barnacles on the outside of the shell. Must have been pretty uncomfortable! Is this due to calcuim deficiency? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thank you Janine
Egluntyne
It is generally considered to be due to calcium deficiency. Why not try her with a bit of Limestone flour. (Available at horsey type shops and on Ebay). It is pure calcium carbonate and very readily absorbed. There are also Calcium supplements available with Vit D such as Zolcal or DavinovaC
