More4 tonight 10pm Our Daily Bread - Did anyone watch?

Our Daily Bread

Tues 29 April 2008 10pm

"This beautiful and evocative documentary is a powerful look at the industry of agriculture throughout Europe. "

"Whatever conclusions you draw, one thing is certain: by the time you've sat through to the final scene you'll never look at your food in quite the same way again."

The above is from the More4 website - the trailer has some disturbing images but this may be of interest to a lot of us on the forum.

They will be covering intensive meat rearing and battery hens.

We recorded it and watched last night, but, did fast forward over a lot - as there was no narrative to go with the filming.

It extremely disturbing to see the intensive breeding programs especially the young chicks being de-beaked and the piglets castrated at what looked like very young ages.

The film has re-inforced my belief in making better informed purchasing decisions when it comes to buying/sourcing our food.

Did anyone else get to watch it?

I've watched half of it so far. I have to admit I watched it slightly sped up (the joys of sky +)

The chicks being debeaked ugh. And the conveyer belts I could just cope with but the thing firing them out!

I have to agree with Buffy its the faces of the workers. Not that we can blame them because could you do that job if it made you feel bad all day. Its the consumers etc who make it liek that.

i recorded it but not sure if i should watch it as i'll only upset myself. I'm aware of what goes on in intensive farming and make the best ethical choices I can, so I'm still dithering about watching it.

Might wait til Dad's out of hospital and then watch it but I think all it will achieve is to upset me even more so I might give it a miss :?

still undecided on this one

You are right buffie....they were just ordinary folk going about their business.

I did fast forward it I must confess. The sandwich eating scene finished me off.

One thing that stood out for me was how stark and clean every thing seemed to be.

Yes Anne it was 'sanitized' wasn't it. The vast production units and veggies being sprayed with goodness knows what, toxicity must have been pretty high when you saw all the suits and breathing equipment they wore :x

Poet I know what you mean, it's up to you entirely and I can only say it was powerful and I am pleased I watched and I did have a cry.
