My Pepperpot 'Sage' started laying last tuesday and albeit a small egg (43g)-it was however perfect.The next egg turned out to be a double yolker so was a suprising bonus!

 

The eggs are currently around the 50g mark,but am wondering when they'll be at full size? She has currently laid 8 eggs in 8 days.

 

ps.Onion my Gingernut hasnt started laying yet so im waiting for her!

I think it depends on the chicken

 

One of ours has been laying for about 3 weeks and her eggs rarely go over 45g

 

Another has been laying for a 10 days, started at about 40g, then laying double yolkers every other day, went on to lay two softies instead of double yolkers and now lays perfect single yolk eggs weighing 70-80g every day.

sounds familiar my first layer has laid 8 eggs started at 42g and have stalled at 50g i was hoping they would continue to get bigger!

I think we gotta take em as they comes. In the last few days, I've had a torpedo egg at 55g and three perfectly shaped wee 35g eggs. Who knows what tomorrow will bring!

Sage today laid a whopper of an egg which tipped the scales at 100g!!! Weird that she's gone from laying 50g eggs to double that size.Hopefully tommorrows will be a big one too,but she may not lay at all because i had to use a chainsaw earlier which spooked them.

 

Still cant get over the size of the egg!!!

Honest-this is no joke!!! I wish i had photographed it for evidence,but i gave it to a friend aling with a few more for giving me a hand for cutting a large tree down so i guess he'll be eating it tommorrow morning.I've never seen an egg this big!!!

Eggs vary in size when a chook first comes into lay and eventually they even out on size once they get into the swing of things!

I'm so Opal has been laying for a week and has managed 52g. Pearl has been laying for 4 days and managed to lay a tiny 25g! They have got slightly bigger again!

In my experience it takes a good few months of laying before you get a consistant 'large' sized egg

I had to buy some again today , i hate to do that but 3 days of 44-50g eggs for 5 of us isnt going to cut it !

I'm considering increasing the number of chickens - as we are going through the eggs quicker than the poor chickens can lay them!

Well i would today lol

but they do poop alot as they free range most of the day and i have to clean it up every day because i childmind. 3 lots of chicken poop is enough for me!
